First session
In the first session, I aim to create a safe and non- judgemental space where patients can feel safe and be heard. This session will involve asking questions about current situations, current symptoms, and past experiences, including family history to help understand needs. After history taking, a treatment plan will be developed and we arrive at goals to be met. Having done that we explore previous treatments and reasons for failures. Then we both(patient and provider) discuss how we can explore all treatment options for a better treatment. Strengths
My greatest strength as a PMHNP is my ability to provide holistic, compassionate, patient-centered care. I prioritize building a strong therapeutic relationship, ensuring that patients feel heard, valued , and empowered in their treatment journey. My strong clinical judgement ,cultural sensitivity, clinical reasoning, and empathetic listening enable me to build comprehensive care that promotes long term wellbeing. Additionally, i am committed to allowing my patients to take control of their mental health and well-beings, thereby improving their quality of life.
Ideal clients
I am best positioned to serve adults and adolescents experiencing challenges related to mood disorders, anxiety, ADHD, and depression. My ideal clients are individuals who are seeking a collaborative, supportive approach to mental health care, whether they are navigating a new diagnosis or managing chronic conditions. I work well with clients who are open to a combination of medication management, psychoeducation, and lifestyle modifications. I also have a strong background in working with diverse populations and those who value culturally sensitive, individualized care delivered in a safe and respectful environment
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
As an experienced PMHNP, I used CBT treatment strategies for my clients on many occasions. I encourage them to identify and challenge negative thought patterns, thereby helping them identify and develop coping mechanisms, such as relaxation techniques and problem-solving skills. This helps them to develop new behaviors and also improves their mental well-being. I encourage exposure techniques for anxiety and related disorders. I also integrate it alongside their medication management when appropriate to provide a holistic approach to my patient care, I have regularly tracked the progress of my clients and find CBT reduces their anxiety and depression, improves their ability to cope with stress, develop self-esteem and confidence, enables them to develop healthier relationships, and gain a greater sense of control over their thoughts and behaviors.
Culturally Sensitive Therapy
My experiences entail using culturally sensitive therapy for most of my clients from diverse backgrounds. I would respect and understand the patient cultural context, and in providing effective and compassionate mental health care. I would create a safe and supportive environment that promotes healing and well-being. My experiences involve using open-ended questions to explore clients cultural beliefs about illness, healing and treatment. I incorporate all principles of Culturally Sensitive Therapy: such as having cultural humility by recognizing personal limitations and biases about mental health, I remain open to learning about the client's culture on issues concerning mental health. I acquire more knowledge of cultural competency to have skills about the client's cultural context, their cultural norms, values, and beliefs on mental health. I have respect for the client’s differences thereby valuing the client's unique experiences and perspectives, without making assumptions or generalizations. I empowered the client to share their experiences and beliefs, collaborating with them to develop treatment goals and strategies. I would use culturally therapeutic techniques and interventions that are consistent with the client's cultural background and beliefs.
Strength-Based
My experience with strength-based therapy involves patients-individualized care approaches that emphasize the importance of their strengths. By focusing on what clients do well, this therapy has empowered them to overcome challenges, improve their well-being, and achieve their goals. It is a collaborative and optimistic approach. This has helped patients set realistic goals to improve motivation and resilience I used strength-based therapy for a wide range of patients such as patients with anxiety and depression, life trauma or PTSD, Drug Addictions, relationships, and career challenges. I would use some strength-based assessments such as strength assessment to identify the patient’s strengths, solution-focused questions asking about times they have overcome challenges or used their strengths successfully. Goal setting that assessed about setting achievable goals that leverage the patient’s strengths. Sometimes I would use positive reinforcement to provide feedback and also encourage reinforcement of patients strength. .
