Lariza Fenner-Lux
I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and a Registered Art Therapist (ATR) who has worked with people across the lifespan and has helped children, adolescents, and adults who struggle with mental illness, community violence, substance use disorders, and early relational trauma. I believe that people know themselves and their experiences very well, so I seek to create a place where clients can be empowered to find the change they want in their lives. When working with infants, children, and their families, I assess the development of the child, the attachment relationship between caregiver and child, and possible disruptions in these important relationships. I have helped adolescents with school-related anxiety, learning accommodations, medical trauma, and gender exploration. I have helped young adults in their transition to adulthood and resolved issues related to their family structures that often follow into later developmental phases. I have helped older adults with management strategies for anxiety and resolve lifelong struggles with traumatic stress.
I work to create ease around difficult topics and also specialize in working with patients who have experienced single-event and chronic relational trauma (type I&II).
As an art therapist, I utilize creative techniques when words may fail in the therapeutic setting. Often, the creative process helps people focus on the present moment and the many aspects of self-exploration in therapy.
First session
Initially, I will work with clients to identify a key issue they would like to address, knowing that other elements will mostly likely come into the sessions. Depending on previous history, I will work to establish a diagnosis with the client and reassess often along the way to best cater the therapeutic interventions to the problem at hand. I can be less solution focused if this is what is agreed upon between me and my patient.
Strengths
My strength as a therapist is creating space for personal realization and change that is designed equally between therapist and client. I defer the power of change to the patient and have a vast understanding of individual differences. I have had the opportunity to serve very diverse populations and bring that experience of acceptance and respect to the therapy session.
