I am Matthew C. Volzer, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) with over two decades of experience working in mental health and 12 years providing evidence-based therapy to individuals, couples, and families. My expertise lies in cognitive-behavioral therapy, trauma focused therapy, and family systems approaches. I have had the privilege of working with diverse populations, including those facing significant mental health challenges, behavioral issues, and complex family dynamics.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

The first therapy session is an important step in your journey toward healing and growth. It’s an opportunity for us to get to know each other, establish a comfortable and trusting environment, and begin laying the foundation for our work together. Here’s what you can expect: Introductions and Rapport Building: We’ll start with introductions and a brief overview of my background and approach to therapy. This is also a chance for you to share a bit about yourself and what brought you to therapy. Discussing Your Goals: I’ll ask about your reasons for seeking therapy and what you hope to achieve. Whether you have specific goals in mind or are simply looking for support, we’ll explore these together. Gathering History: I’ll gather information about your personal and family history, significant life events, and any current challenges you’re facing. This helps me gain a comprehensive understanding of your situation. Explaining the Process: I’ll explain how therapy works, including confidentiality, session structure, and what you can expect from our time together. This is a good time to ask any questions you may have. Establishing a Plan: We’ll begin to outline a plan for therapy, including potential strategies and approaches tailored to your needs. This plan can evolve as we progress. Setting the Tone: The first session is about creating a safe and supportive space where you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and feelings. It’s normal to feel a range of emotions, and there’s no pressure to delve into everything right away.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I have been trained in and have been using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) interventions for the past 12 years. Additionally, I have been certified in TEAM CBT for the past 5 years. In my practice, I assist clients in identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and beliefs that contribute to emotional distress and unhelpful behaviors. Together, we work on recognizing these thoughts and reframing them into more balanced and constructive perspectives. Alongside this, I help clients develop practical coping strategies and behavioral techniques to manage symptoms, enhance emotional regulation, and foster healthier relationships.
