Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our initial meeting, patients can expect to be greeted with sensitivity, empathy, and non-judgment. I will listen to the patient’s concerns and experiences, carefully taking them into account while using my clinical expertise to formulate treatment options. During the initial session, I will conduct an in depth psychiatric assessment, in order to gather the information that is needed to develop a holistic understanding of the patient's mental health picture. This assessment will include medical history, current symptoms, and psychosocial factors. We will then work together to create a treatment plan customized to their mental health. Before the session comes to a close, I will thoroughly describe all treatment options, which may include medications, lifestyle alterations, therapy sessions, and self-care strategies. As a team, we will decide on a plan, and how to best move forward.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

First, and foremost, I am easy to talk to. I am a real person, who has experienced many ups and downs in life, and my own mental health struggles. I understand that it is difficult to seek help, and can appreciate the courage it takes to take the step to better yourself. I am empathetic, compassionate, and adaptable. I offer a judgement free zone to my patients, and a safe space to be authentically themselves. I am dedicated to continued education, always learning the newest treatment options for my patients.

I offer comprehensive mental health care to patients across the life span. On a weekly basis, I work with clients from 6 to 75 years old. I routinely treat patients wtih anxiety, depression, substance abuse disorders, mood disorders, psychosis, trauma related disorders, and many more.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

As an adjunct to medication management, I use Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to ensure that conversations are functional and effective. CBT is a highly flexible technique used to manage an array of mental illnesses. Simply put, CBT is a research-based therapy that provides direction to a conversation. CBT will raise a patient's awareness of their thoughts, feelings, and experiences when used correctly. I use CBT to help patients recognize and challenge distorted patterns of thinking. CBT aims to help patients repair and strengthen their resilience. We are all innately gifted with personal resilience and the ability to repair and restore that resilience. It is the part of us that gives us the ability to cope with emotional stress.

After going in circles with primary care providers, I decided to try something new—and I’m so glad I did. I had such a positive experience finding my therapist through Grow Therapy that I decided to use it again to find a psychologist. Grow Therapy’s options made it easy to browse hundreds of qualified professionals and find someone who could truly fit my needs. So far, Shelby has done just that. The kindness in her care makes her an exceptional PMHNP.
