About me

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and you may be wondering what our work together would actually look like. My goal is to create a supportive, collaborative space where you can better understand yourself, build practical skills, and work toward a life that feels more manageable and meaningful. I use Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) as a primary approach. DBT is a skills-based, evidence-informed therapy that can help with managing intense emotions, navigating relationships, tolerating difficult situations, and responding to yourself and others with greater awareness and effectiveness. Depending on your goals, we may focus on any or all of the following: • Managing strong or overwhelming emotions • Building healthier relationships and boundaries • Increasing mindfulness and self-awareness • Tolerating distress without making situations worse • Strengthening self-compassion • Building a life aligned with your values Therapy works best when we approach it as a team. I’ll bring clinical knowledge, structure, support, and honest feedback; you bring your experiences, goals, questions, and willingness to practice new approaches. You can expect me to encourage and challenge you, when appropriate, and help you make sense of what you are experiencing. There may be times when therapy feels rough, particularly when we are looking at patterns you have used for a long time. We'll work through those moments together rather than expecting you to navigate them alone. You will also have opportunities to practice skills between sessions. The goal isn't just talking about what is happening in your life—it's to help you develop tools you can use in your life. The hope is over time, you leave therapy with a greater understanding of yourself, confidence in your ability to handle difficulties, and a sense that you can build a life worth living.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session together, we'll start getting to know each other and creating a comfortable environment where we both can talk openly. We will start to identify and understand the challenges that motivated you to come to counseling. This will help us create a tailored plan for us to work through in follow-up sessions.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

In my career, I have worked with children, teens, and adults. I have worked with the courts. I have worked with child welfare systems. I have worked with drug and alcohol dependency programs. I have worked at schools and courthouses, and homeless shelters, and rehab facilities. In addition, I have a broad educational background and a thirst for knowledge that keeps me learning. And all of this has helped me to develop compassion and empathy and the means of finding a way to connect with my clients on a meaningful level and to see each person as an individual.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I enjoy working with all kinds of people, however I love working with people in recovery: many times their recovery journey includes co-occurring mental health issues. My clients are eager to improve, but don't yet have the tools needed to make this goal a reality. They often feel stuck, overwhelmed, and anxious at the prospect of a whole life overhaul.

My treatment methods

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I am certified in dialectical behavior therapy and have found it beneficial for a variety of life situations. DBT emphasizes a unique collaborative approach where the therapist and client work together as partners. The therapist acts as a coach, guiding the client through the process of learning and applying DBT skills. An advantage of DBT, is clients can walk away after one session, with a new life/coping skill, it doesn't always take weeks or months to make progress.

Polyvagal Therapy

I use polyvagal therapy to assist clients with anxiety, trauma response, and emotional distress. In a nutshell, polyvagal addresses the emotional and physical responses we learn over the course of life that kept us safe but now keep us from forming healthy connections to other people, including ourselves.

Integrative

I am also certified in integrative mental health. This style of counseling highlights all parts of self: biological, psychological, social, and spiritual. Psychoeducation is a big part of this therapy, for example, learning about sleep hygeine or nutrition habits and how these can be improved on to increase life satisfaction.

I felt comfortable right away with Heather. She so understanding. She challenges me to become a better me. The biggest thing is she so nonjudgmental.

Heather is definitely doing a great job because I feel she truly cares. It seems as if she enjoys her job and means well. Just a little time I have talked to her, to me, she knows what I need.
