I've been a licensed psychologist since 1980. I have since acquired a wealth of education, training, and experience which I look forward to utilizing for the benefit of my Grow Therapy clients. During my US Air Force career, I was the Director of Biofeedback and Stress Management at three USAF medical centers. This included doing psychological assessments for human reliability certification, commander-directed psychological evaluations, providing individual and group direct care at the MH Clinics, and conducting many psycho-educational/treatment groups in stress management, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and the treatment of psychophysiological symptoms such as headache, IBS, asthma, and more. Since retiring from the Air Force in 1998, I was a consultant in human resources for two years and then started practicing privately as an MH provider for Medicare, Medicaid, and numerous insurance companies. Since March 2018, I've practiced via Telehealth only. I am a BCIA Board Certified practitioner of Biofeedback and Neurofeedback, hold a Certificate of Professional Qualification as a Psychologist from the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards and am a member of several professional organizations. As a GrowTherapy provider, I will provide virtual treatment utilizing Interactive Teletherapy for Stress Reduction (IT-SR). IT-SR is a treatment format I developed to enable my clients to improve their self-regulation skills which are essential to restore homeostasis. Homeostasis is the optimal or baseline state of mind-body balance wherein optimal functionality is supported. Most mental and physical health problems that occur are developed when there has been a disruption of our mind-body balance. I assist my clients in resolving their MH issues and re-establishing their optimal functioning, or mind-body balance, with Cognitive-behavioral techniques, EMDR, EFT, assertiveness training, talk therapy, and neuromodulation with home training devices. I use questionnaires and supplement my therapy with written educational materials as appropriate.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session, we'll review the intake forms you completed before the appointment and discuss the challenges you're facing and what you'd like to accomplish during your treatment. We'll begin by developing a plan for achieving those goals and how your progress will be measured. We'll continue to refine this in subsequent sessions.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I am well-rounded in working with all members of the medical community. While in the USAF and working at large medical centers, it was my privilege to work with physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and commanders, all of whom I joined in providing health care to our active duty, dependents, and retirees. I think my greatest strengths come from the in-depth experience I've had in working with people from all walks of life, including military, civilian, professional, and non-professional. In addition, my strengths as a therapist come from my perceptive understanding of the cause-and-effect relationships of human behavior and my personality traits in being a calm understanding, empathetic person who enjoys helping others. While on active duty in the Air Force, I was awarded three medals or awards that recognized my outstanding service. As a self-employed provider, I continue to work with the same motivations and work ethic. Sometimes I feel it might be more correct to refer to myself as a psychophysiologist because of my strong interests in mind-body relationships and the applications of bio and neurofeedback. I support the position that high levels of chronic stress result in chronically high levels of nervous system arousal which in turn results in the loss of homeostasis, or the optimal mind-body state of balance, and is associated with good health and a sense of well-being. The ideology I work from is that most of the psychological, emotional, and behavioral problems that are referred to as mental disorders result from an imbalance in the mind-body system. My job as a psychologist, psychotherapist, or practitioner of mind-body technologies is to do my best to apply my knowledge and skills to help my clients re-establish their mind-body balance or homeostasis.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I started using CBT as a graduate student in my practicums in the 1980s. Back then it was known as Rational-Emotive Therapy. CBT helps us to understand how our self-talk, or what we tell ourselves about and the meaning we give to the events of our lives, actually creates the feelings we have and how we ultimately say and do. By analyzing and changing our self-talk to eliminate the cognitive distortions, exaggerations, and negativity we will remove the cause of much of the distress we may feel.

EMDR

I was introduced to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing methods (EMDR) when it first started in the late 1990s. This process enables accessing the brain's emotional memory centers using bilateral stimulation and then replacing the thoughts and feelings that are associated with prior traumatic experiences with new ways of thinking and feeling about these experiences that are representative of recovery from the trauma. In a sense, it enables us to let go of the "there and then" thoughts and feelings that were originally developed at the time of the trauma and replace them with "here and now" thoughts and feelings that are representative of recovery from the trauma. I have found it to be an extremely powerful technique.

Hypnotherapy

As a previous member of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis at the mediem level of provisioncy, I found the use of hypnosis to be very effective with selected clients. That is to say, it wasn't the modality of choice for everyone. Some people are very comfortable with it while others are leery of losing self-control. Losing self-control however is a mith. No one will do anything under hypnosis that they wouldn't do while not under hypnosis. It is a process of deep and focused relaxation often referred to as a trance in which the person is coached through a process of imagining and otherwise allowing themselves to use their own internal resources to find a way to cope with and otherwise resolve their issues.

Biofeedback

I've been Board Certified (BCIA) as a practitioner of Biofeedback, and later Neurofeedback, since 1986. Since I only provide virtual treatment now, I do not provide these services at present. I will offer them again when/if I reopen a physical office at which I would see my clients in-person. With regards to the IT-SR therapy format I do virtually, I assist my clients in utilizing limited biofeedback and neuromodulation treatment (transcranial magnetic, electrical, visual, and auditory stimulation) using a variety of home training devices and selected phone apps.
