New to Grow
Hi, I’m Shenelle Roebuck, LCSW, and I’m the founder of Kuumba Therapy, LLC. I’m a licensed clinical social worker, therapist, and empowerment-focused professional who believes that healing is not about becoming someone new, it’s about reconnecting with the person you have always been underneath the pain, expectations, and experiences that may have shaped you. For more than 15 years, I have had the privilege of walking alongside individuals as they navigate trauma, anxiety, life transitions, self-esteem challenges, relationships, and personal growth. At Kuumba Therapy, I focus on helping clients move beyond simply coping and toward living with greater confidence, clarity, purpose, and joy. I help clients recognize their strengths, understand how past experiences may influence their present, develop healthier boundaries, strengthen their self-worth, and create practical strategies for meaningful change.
Your first therapy session is an opportunity to slow down, breathe, and begin telling your story in a space where you don’t have to have everything figured out. During our first session, we’ll spend time getting to know you: what brought you to therapy, what you’re currently experiencing, what you hope will change, and what you would like support with. You’ll have the opportunity to share as much or as little as feels comfortable. There is no expectation that you have the “right” words or know exactly where to begin. I’ll help guide the conversation. You can expect a warm, supportive, and judgment-free environment where we begin building a therapeutic relationship based on trust, respect, and collaboration. We’ll also talk about your history, strengths, current challenges, and goals so that I can better understand the whole person, not just the problem that brought you through the door. By the end of your first session, you should have a clearer understanding of what therapy with me will look like, what we can work on together, and some initial direction for moving forward. Depending on your needs, we may identify a few practical tools or strategies you can begin using between sessions.
I bring a warm, compassionate, and culturally responsive approach to every session. My goal is to create a safe, judgment-free space where clients feel heard, understood, and empowered to be their authentic selves. I combine clinical expertise with practical tools that help clients move from simply surviving to truly thriving. I believe therapy should be collaborative, so I work alongside each client to identify their strengths, understand the experiences that have shaped them, and develop strategies that support meaningful and lasting change.
My ideal client is someone who is ready to stop simply surviving and begin creating a life that feels more authentic, fulfilling, and aligned with who they are. They may be navigating anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, burnout, life transitions, relationship challenges, or the emotional impact of constantly being the strong one for everyone else. They recognizes that their past has influenced them but does not want their past to define their future. They are curious, open to self-reflection, and willing to participate actively in the therapeutic process. They simply know that something needs to change and are ready to explore what that change could look like.
I use evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), tailoring treatment to each client's needs, goals, and comfort level. My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and focused on helping clients understand themselves while developing practical tools for meaningful change. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a trauma-focused approach that can help the brain process distressing or overwhelming experiences that may continue to affect you in the present. EMDR does not require you to go into extensive detail about every aspect of a traumatic experience. Instead, with appropriate preparation and when you feel ready, we work together to help your brain process difficult experiences in a way that can reduce their emotional intensity and impact. I may use CBT, EMDR, or elements of both depending on what you need. We will never rush the process. Establishing safety, trust, and emotional stability is an important part of our work, particularly when addressing trauma. My goal is not simply to help you manage symptoms. It is to help you understand your experiences, develop effective coping tools, heal from what has happened, and move forward with greater confidence, self-awareness, and emotional freedom.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps us explore the connection between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Together, we identify patterns of thinking that may be contributing to anxiety, self-doubt, overwhelm, or other challenges. We then work on developing healthier and more balanced ways of thinking and responding. CBT can also provide practical strategies that you can use outside of sessions to manage difficult emotions, challenge unhelpful beliefs, and build confidence.
