Jammie Benton-Speyer
Your story, needs, and goals guide our work together. I draw from IFS, mindfulness, body awareness, EFT, and trauma-informed approaches, choosing what feels most comfortable for you. Together, we’ll build on your strengths, make sense of what you’re experiencing, and develop a deeper understanding of yourself with compassion and curiosity. Taking steps toward better mental health takes courage and vulnerability. You’ve already done the hard part, identifying that you need support. If you think we might be a good fit, please reach out!
First session
Our first session gives you the opportunity to tell me about you, your life, and what brings you to therapy. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you walk through the door, and you don’t need to know exactly what you want to work on. We can start wherever you are. My style is casual, compassionate, and client-centered. I’ll ask questions to get to know you—your experiences, relationships, strengths, challenges, and what feels important to you right now. I’ll also make sure there is plenty of space for you to ask questions, get a sense of who I am, and decide whether I feel like the right person to walk alongside you. We’ll talk about what brought you to therapy, what you’re hoping might be different, and what you would like our work together to look like. We may begin identifying some goals, but I don’t believe we need to have the entire path mapped out in our first conversation. Sometimes the most important thing is simply having a place to slow down and begin making sense of what’s happening. Most importantly, our first session is the beginning of a relationship. Therapy is deeply personal, and I want you to feel comfortable being yourself with me—even when you’re unsure, overwhelmed, emotional, or don’t quite know what to say. My hope is that you leave our first session feeling heard, understood, and perhaps a little more hopeful than when you arrived. From there, we’ll figure out the next steps together.
Strengths
As someone who came to this profession a little later in life, I bring a fair amount of lived experience to the work we do together. Of course, our time together is about your story, not mine. But sometimes there is something powerful about having someone in your corner who can genuinely resonate with what you’re going through and offer a perspective grounded in both professional and life experience. I’m not here to give you advice or tell you what you should or shouldn’t do. I’m here to help you listen more closely to yourself, make sense of what you’re experiencing, and find your own way forward. But I am also living proof that it’s possible to move through life’s hardest challenges. I know what it feels like to think, I will never get through this, and to eventually look back and realize, I thought I would never get through that—and here I am. I think there is something deeply hopeful in that. Not because difficult things always have a neat ending, but because we are often far more capable of adapting, growing, and finding our way than we realize when we are in the middle of it. Sometimes having someone beside you who truly believes that can make all the difference.
Ideal clients
My ideal clients are women, teens, and couples who are navigating change, feeling stuck, or wanting to understand themselves and their relationships more deeply. You may be moving through a major life transition, struggling with anxiety or overwhelm, working through trauma or grief, questioning who you are, or simply feeling like something in your life or relationships isn’t working the way you want it to. For women, I often work with those who have spent years caring for others, meeting expectations, or holding everything together and are beginning to ask, What do I actually want? What do I need? And who am I beyond all the roles I’ve been carrying? I especially enjoy working with women through the complicated, messy, and unexpected transitions of adulthood and midlife. For teens, I offer a space where they can be themselves without feeling judged, fixed, or talked down to. Adolescence is a time of figuring out who you are while navigating friendships, family, school, identity, and a world that can feel overwhelming. My goal is to help teens develop greater self-understanding, emotional awareness, confidence, and a stronger sense of agency. For couples, I work with partners who want to understand each other more deeply and change patterns that leave them feeling disconnected, unheard, or stuck. Whether you’re navigating conflict, a major transition, or simply wanting to strengthen your relationship, we’ll look beneath the surface to understand the emotions, needs, and patterns shaping your connection. Across all of my work, I believe you are the expert on your own life. My role is to bring curiosity, compassion, and clinical experience while creating a space where you feel genuinely seen, understood, and supported.
Treatment methods
Attachment-based
Attachment-based therapy recognizes that our relationships shape how we understand ourselves, connect with others, and navigate the world, while creating a safe, trusting therapeutic relationship where meaningful change can begin.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
I integrate Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help you understand the different parts of yourself with curiosity and compassion, creating space to explore difficult thoughts, emotions, and behaviors without judgment.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I find CBT useful for helping you recognize patterns in your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and develop practical tools to create meaningful change in the ways you respond to life’s challenges.
Person-centered (Rogerian)
I focus on person-centered approaches because I believe you are the expert on your own life, and meaningful change happens when you feel safe, heard, understood, and empowered to explore what is most important to you.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
I use EFT with couples because it helps partners look beneath conflict to understand the emotions, needs, and attachment patterns that shape their relationship, creating greater safety, connection, and understanding.
