First session
Starting therapy can feel a little strange. You’re meeting someone new and talking about yourself or parts of your life that you may not typically discuss with many other people. You may feel nervous, unsure of what to say, or even wonder, “Where am I supposed to start?” That is completely okay. Think of the first session as a conversation and an opportunity for us to get to know each other. The first session provides an opportunity for me to learn more about you, including what’s going on in your life, what has been weighing on you, what brought you to therapy, and what you hope might be different as a result of our work together. I’ll ask questions about your current concerns, strengths, and anything else that helps me understand the bigger picture. This also provides an opportunity for you to ask me questions and learn more about me as a therapist. You also don’t have to tell me your entire life story in one session. Therapy is a process, and we have time. One thing I especially want clients to know is that I am a person, too. Yes, I’m your therapist, and I take that role seriously—but I’m also another human being sitting across from you. I am here to listen, understand, ask questions, offer perspective and insight, provide tools for daily life, and create a space where you can be open and honest about what’s really going on. And the first session isn’t only about me getting to know you. You’re getting to know me, too. You don’t have to arrive knowing exactly where therapy will lead. Just show up as you are. We can figure out the rest together.
Strengths
My goal is to make therapy useful beyond the session, providing tools and insights you can apply in your everyday life. No matter what your goals or issues you are facing, we can work on them together. Therapy should feel human. You can expect warmth, curiosity, honesty, and even humor. My goal is to work alongside you. You bring your experiences, your concerns, and your knowledge of your own life. I bring clinical experience, thoughtful questions, new perspectives, and a willingness to challenge you to help you grow. Together, we work toward greater insight, meaningful change, and a clearer understanding of where you want to go next. Therapy with me is a conversation. It is not a one-sided experience where you do all the talking, while I simply sit back and nod. I believe some of the most meaningful work happens when we are both actively engaged in the process. My style is interactive, direct, supportive, and insight-oriented. I ask questions - sometimes the ones you may not have thought to ask yourself. I offer perspectives, share observations, and help you look at situations from angles that may be difficult to see from the inside. Drawing from my professional experience, I can help you recognize patterns, make connections, or better understand what may be keeping you stuck. I also believe growth sometimes requires being challenged. That means I may gently push you beyond your comfort zone, ask hard questions, or encourage you to take an honest look at something you have been avoiding. With a personalized and integrative approach, I draw from a variety of evidence-based techniques that are tailored to your individual needs. Choosing to invest in yourself is not selfish - it's an act of care that reaches far beyond you. The work you do here can strengthen your relationships, your sense of purpose, your approach to the day, your work life, and your home life. You are worth that investment! Taking the time to care for yourself is empowering for you and the people around you.
Ideal clients
I work with adults and couples who are seeking meaningful change. You may be navigating anxiety, depression, grief, relationship challenges, trauma, addiction, ADHD, OCD, LGBTQIA+ concerns, life transitions, family conflict, or simply feeling stuck or overwhelmed. You don’t need to have everything figured out before coming to therapy. I enjoy working with clients who are open to honest conversations, new perspectives, and exploring patterns that may be holding them back. Together, we’ll focus on your goals, identifying what you want to change, exploring what is working, and finding a path forward.
