Hello, and welcome! I’m DeShonda Tyynismaa, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC), currently pursuing my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). I believe mental health care should be compassionate, personalized, and free of judgment. My goal is to create a safe, supportive environment where you feel heard, respected, and empowered to take an active role in your mental wellness.

Whether you’re seeking help for the first time, exploring medication options, or looking for ongoing psychiatric support, we’ll work together to develop a treatment plan that fits your individual needs.

I provide virtual psychiatric care for adolescents ages 13–17 and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood disorders, stress, life transitions, and other mental health concerns. My services include comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and supportive therapeutic interventions when clinically appropriate. My approach is collaborative and evidence-based, recognizing that each person’s experiences, challenges, and goals are unique. Whether you’re seeking help for the first time, exploring medication options, or looking for ongoing psychiatric support, we’ll work together to develop a treatment plan that fits your individual needs. You don’t have to navigate your mental health journey alone. I look forward to partnering with you toward greater balance, resilience, and emotional well-being.

First session

Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other in a welcoming, supportive, and judgment-free environment. We’ll begin with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, discussing your current concerns, symptoms, medical and mental health history, lifestyle, and personal goals. I understand that seeking mental health care can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. My approach is relaxed, compassionate, and conversational. You’ll have the opportunity to share your experiences, ask questions, and express any concerns at your own pace. Together, we’ll explore potential diagnoses, discuss treatment options, including medication when appropriate, and develop a personalized plan that aligns with your needs and preferences. My goal is for you to leave your first session feeling heard, understood, reassured, and confident about your next steps toward better mental health.

Strengths

I bring a compassionate, attentive, and nonjudgmental approach to every session, creating a welcoming space where clients feel genuinely heard, respected, and understood. As a dual board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health and Family Nurse Practitioner, I offer a unique perspective that recognizes the important connection between mental and physical health. My strengths include active listening, building trusting relationships, and helping clients feel comfortable discussing even their most difficult experiences. I combine evidence-based psychiatric care with a personalized, collaborative approach, recognizing that no two individuals experience mental health challenges in the same way. What sets my approach apart is my commitment to treating the whole person, not just a diagnosis. I take time to understand your concerns, explore treatment options together, and develop realistic goals that align with your needs and preferences. Above all, I want you to leave each session feeling supported, empowered, and confident that your voice matters in your care.

Ideal clients

My ideal client is an adolescent or adult who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood changes, overwhelming stress, or life transitions and is looking for compassionate, personalized mental health support. You may feel emotionally exhausted, have difficulty managing daily responsibilities, or simply recognize that something doesn’t feel quite right. Whether you’re exploring psychiatric care for the first time, considering medication, or seeking ongoing medication management, you deserve to feel heard, understood, and supported without judgment. I especially enjoy working with individuals who are open to collaboration, curious about understanding their mental health, and ready to take meaningful steps toward positive change—even if they’re unsure where to begin. You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out. Together, we’ll explore your concerns, identify your strengths, and develop a realistic, individualized treatment plan that supports your goals, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life.

Origin story

My passion for mental health care comes from a genuine desire to help people feel heard, understood, and supported during life’s most challenging moments. Throughout my nursing career, I’ve witnessed how deeply emotional well-being affects physical health, relationships, and overall quality of life. These experiences inspired me to pursue advanced training in psychiatric mental health care. I believe everyone deserves compassionate, judgment-free care and the opportunity to feel empowered in their healing journey. What I find most rewarding is helping individuals rediscover their strengths, regain confidence, and experience meaningful improvements in their daily lives. For me, this profession is more than providing treatment. It’s about building trusting relationships, offering hope, and reminding people that positive change is possible, one step at a time.

Ongoing work together

Our ongoing sessions will focus on your individual needs, treatment goals, and overall well-being. We’ll regularly check in on how you’re feeling, discuss changes in your mood, anxiety, sleep, focus, and daily functioning, and evaluate how well your treatment is working. If medication is part of your care, we’ll monitor its effectiveness, address potential side effects, and make adjustments together when appropriate. Progress isn’t always about big changes. Sometimes it’s feeling less overwhelmed, sleeping better, managing stress more confidently, or finding joy in everyday activities again. We’ll use regular conversations, symptom assessments, and personalized goals to recognize improvements and identify areas that may need additional support. I believe mental health care should be a partnership where your voice matters. My goal is for you to feel supported, empowered, and confident in your progress, knowing that every step forward—no matter how small—is meaningful.

Treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I incorporate principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) into my psychiatric care to help clients understand how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence their mental well-being. Together, we explore unhelpful thinking patterns, identify triggers, and develop practical strategies to manage anxiety, depression, stress, and other emotional challenges. My approach is collaborative, supportive, and tailored to each client’s needs. I may incorporate cognitive reframing, problem-solving, coping skills, and behavioral strategies alongside medication management when appropriate. My goal is to help clients develop healthier perspectives, strengthen emotional resilience, and build practical skills they can use in everyday life. When more structured or intensive CBT is needed, I encourage collaboration with a qualified therapist to provide comprehensive, coordinated care.

Faith-based therapy

I recognize that faith and spirituality can be meaningful sources of hope, strength, comfort, and resilience. When faith is important to a client’s life, I welcome the opportunity to incorporate their spiritual beliefs and values into their mental health treatment in a respectful, supportive, and nonjudgmental way. My approach is client-centered and guided by each individual’s preferences. Together, we may explore how faith, prayer, spiritual practices, and personal values can support emotional well-being, strengthen coping skills, and provide comfort during challenging times. I integrate these discussions with evidence-based psychiatric care, including medication management when appropriate, while respecting each client’s unique beliefs and choices. My goal is to support the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—without imposing religious beliefs or replacing clinical treatment with spiritual practices.

Interpersonal

I incorporate principles of Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) into my psychiatric practice to help clients understand how relationships, communication patterns, and life transitions can affect their emotional well-being. Together, we explore challenges such as relationship conflicts, grief and loss, changes in family dynamics, and difficulties adjusting to new life circumstances. My approach emphasizes compassionate listening, identifying interpersonal stressors, strengthening communication skills, and developing healthier ways to navigate relationships. I help clients recognize how these experiences may contribute to anxiety, depression, and other emotional concerns. When appropriate, I integrate interpersonal strategies with evidence-based psychiatric treatment and medication management. For clients who would benefit from structured, ongoing interpersonal psychotherapy, I encourage collaboration with a qualified therapist. My goal is to help clients build healthier connections, improve emotional resilience, and feel more confident navigating life’s relationships and transitions.

Motivational Interviewing

I incorporate Motivational Interviewing (MI) into my psychiatric practice to help clients explore their personal goals, strengthen motivation, and build confidence in making meaningful changes. I recognize that change can feel overwhelming, and it’s normal to experience uncertainty or mixed feelings about treatment. Through compassionate listening, open-ended questions, and nonjudgmental conversations, I help clients identify their strengths, explore barriers, and discover their own reasons for change. Whether you’re considering medication, developing healthier coping strategies, or working toward improved emotional well-being, we’ll move forward at a pace that feels comfortable for you. My approach emphasizes collaboration, personal choice, and empowerment rather than pressure or judgment. I integrate Motivational Interviewing with evidence-based psychiatric care to support informed decisions and realistic, achievable goals. My goal is to help you feel heard, supported, and confident in your ability to create positive, lasting changes in your life.

Trauma-Focused CBT

I use a trauma-informed approach that incorporates principles of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to help clients understand how traumatic experiences can affect their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and overall well-being. My priority is creating a safe, compassionate, and nonjudgmental environment where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered. I incorporate strategies such as identifying trauma-related thought patterns, strengthening emotional regulation, developing healthy coping skills, and managing anxiety and stress responses. Treatment is individualized, collaborative, and guided by each client’s comfort level and readiness. As a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, I integrate trauma-informed interventions with comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and medication management when appropriate. For clients who would benefit from structured, trauma-focused psychotherapy, including trauma processing, I collaborate with or refer to therapists specifically trained in TF-CBT. My goal is to help clients build resilience, regain a sense of emotional safety, and move toward healing at their own pace.
