Hello! My name is Zoe and I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor. I have a total of 25 years of experience in the mental health field. I received my Masters degree in counseling from Florida State University. My path to becoming a professional counselor stemmed from witnessing, firsthand, mental health care disparity in my own community. It also became clear to me early on that mental health care is just as important as all types of physical care. However, I saw that lack of available resources and social stigma keep some people and, in some cases, communities as a whole from seeking support. I wanted to be a vessel in providing that support and in illuminating the vast and amazing benefits of mental health and wellness.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

During the first session I have what I call a "Get to Know You." I do ask you to tell me about yourself, your family and current relationships. Then I ask about specific goal and needs in counseling and who or what may need to be included in the process if you believe it will be helpful for you.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I feel my greatest strengths as a provider are my ability to be direct and still use humor to help process topics that can be difficult at times. I'm able to maintain a flow within the session and help people feel comfortable and less guarded. I've been told that I am easy to talk to and that definitely helps in making progress toward goals in counseling.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

My primary preference is working with couples. I do enjoy working with individuals also. However, our intimate relationships tend to take a front seat in our lives, and even in individual therapy, relationship concerns are very prevalent. It's most helpful for me to get the "big picture" when I am able to obtain "both sides of the story" and help couples practive effective communication and coping skills to work to repair and rebuild the relationship. In working with individuals its important to know each individual as a whole. I usually inquire about or assess for personality types, family history, communication styles, and global influencing factors. I then consider how some or any of these things may be contributing to the identified concern. Progress and assignments will vary greatly from person to person but will always be individualized. It's important to understand your own learning styles and I always try to accommodate those styles.

My treatment methods

Couples Counseling

My primary preference is to work with couples, but of course I enjoy working with individuals as well. In couples counseling, I can essentially obtain "both sides of the story" and assist in developing effective communication skills for all the information that tends to get "lost in translation." I like to use teachings from Gottman techniques and reality therapy. I have found that it is important to help others learn more about themselves, how to understand unconscious dynamics and how to acquire and process rational beliefs instead of the irrational ones that tend to monopolize.
