About me

Hello, I’m Dr. Leslie Capehart, an LMHC with over 25 years of experience across clinical settings, private practice, and academia. At some point, most people find themselves feeling stuck—whether it’s anxiety, depression, relationship stress, or just a sense that something isn’t working but you can’t quite put your finger on it. It can feel overwhelming, frustrating, and at times like you’re repeating the same patterns without understanding why. That’s where I come in. My approach is straightforward, collaborative, and focused on helping you actually move forward. I’ll support you, but I’ll also challenge you to look more closely at the patterns, assumptions, and blind spots that may be keeping you stuck. Together, we’ll identify what’s no longer working, shift the thinking patterns behind it, and build practical tools you can use in your day-to-day life. I work with clients navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship challenges, and self-esteem, with a focus on helping you gain clarity, make meaningful changes, and stop repeating what isn’t working. ***Please note that I don't specialize in working with addiction issues, and if that is something you are actively struggling with, I encourage you to look for a provider who specializes in working in addictions. It's important you find the best person for you.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

The first session is focused on getting a clear understanding of you and what’s bringing you in. We’ll talk through your background, current situation, and what feels stuck or not working. I’ll also ask about what you’re hoping will change, along with any concerns or hesitations you may have about the process. I’ll give you a sense of how I work and what you can expect from me. There’s plenty of space for questions, and we’ll cover the practical details—confidentiality, session structure, and frequency—so you know what the process will look like moving forward. The counseling relationship matters. This is a collaborative process, and you’ll be an active participant in the work. Therapy doesn’t have to feel heavy or overwhelming—when it’s working well, it can feel clarifying, engaging, and even energizing as you start to understand yourself differently and make meaningful changes. Before Your First Session Please complete the Grow intake forms and assessments in advance. You’ll also receive a consent form that must be reviewed and signed prior to our first appointment. I’m not able to meet until all required forms are completed. Important Policies Remote therapy may not be appropriate if you are experiencing acute suicidal thoughts or require a higher level of care. In those cases, I will help refer you to an in-person provider better suited to support you. A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required for cancellations. Late cancellations and no-shows are charged at the full session rate. Please plan to arrive on time—sessions may need to be rescheduled if you are more than 15 minutes late, and a no show fee will apply.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

I bring a combination of curiosity, perspective, and practical problem-solving to my sessions. I tend to notice patterns quickly and can often help clients connect dots that have felt disconnected or difficult to put into words. I’m also comfortable being direct when it is helpful. I don’t believe therapy should be about simply agreeing with everything a client says; I see it as a collaborative process of looking honestly at what is working, what is not, and what may be getting in the way. At the same time, I work hard to understand each client within the context of their own experiences, values, and way of seeing the world. My goal is to help clients leave sessions with greater clarity, a deeper understanding of themselves, and something meaningful they can actually use outside of therapy.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I’m best positioned to work with adults and college students who are thoughtful, self-aware, and motivated to better understand themselves, but who may still feel stuck in patterns they have not been able to change on their own. Many of the clients I work well with are high-functioning on the outside but internally dealing with anxiety, overthinking, relationship stress, grief, emotional exhaustion, perfectionism, self-criticism, or difficulty setting boundaries. I also enjoy working with college students who are navigating identity, relationships, academic pressure, family expectations, and the transition into greater independence. I especially enjoy working with clients who are open to looking honestly at recurring patterns, considering new perspectives, and applying what we discuss outside of session. My style tends to be a good fit for people who appreciate a therapist who is warm but direct, collaborative, and focused on helping them understand what is keeping them stuck so they can move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Our core beliefs shape how we interpret any particular event and, subsequently, the emotions that follow. We repeat patterns that keep us stuck because we continue to interpret events in ways that reinforce our core and, often faulty, beliefs. Using techniques rooted in CBT, we will uncover the beliefs and thoughts that contribute to your feelings.

Eclectic

My approach is grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy, but my overall style is eclectic and individualized. In addition to CBT, I draw from schema-informed, solution-focused, acceptance-based, and insight-oriented approaches depending on the needs of the client. I often help clients identify connections between their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and recurring patterns, while also looking at the deeper beliefs or experiences that may be driving those patterns. Some clients benefit most from practical strategies and concrete tools; others benefit from understanding why the same emotional or relational patterns continue to show up. I do not believe therapy should be one-size-fits-all. I adapt my approach to the client’s personality, goals, circumstances, and level of insight, with the goal of helping them understand what is keeping them stuck and develop more effective ways of moving forward.
