New to Grow
My name is Alex Dickinson. I have been in the field of helping others for approximately 20 years. The first half focusing on addictions and the last 10 years focused on Mental Health. I worked through my Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work while working as a substance abuse counselor. I attained my Master’s Degree from Syracuse University in 2016. I’ve been Licensed in NYS since late 2016 and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in 2021. I have experience working in residential, outpatient and telehealth settings. I have specialized training and experience in providing trauma-informed care, including modalities of Seeking Safety and Cognitive Processing Therapy. I practice with integrity, compassion and empathy. I believe even the most unreachable client is reachable on some level and can make positive changes in their life. I also believe in providing therapy that typically involves me doing less talking and more listening.
Session #1 may be the most I ever talk in a session, while I’m asking questions to gather important information about your treatment needs and expectations. Treatment is individualized and tailored to your needs. Safety is an important part of the therapy setting from day #1. I allow the client to guide the tempo and direction of treatment to encompass this idea. I provide a therapy experience that is evidence based, strength-focused and non-judgmental.
I’m not afraid to take healthy calculated risks in my therapy approach. My approach is unique because I’m not a Social Worker robot and I practice with a sense of creativity and passion. I’m also willing to talk about the tough things in a safe place if necessary.
I would like to think that no one client characteristic is more ideal for me than another. I treat everyone with respect and if I don’t know something to help a client with their specific needs, I do research and learn how to help. I’m not afraid to tell you I don’t know everything but I will also tell you I enjoy new experiences, learning and growing as a person.
