My name is Erica Shick, Ph.D., I am a fellow traveler, counselor, and one of the lucky people who get to say they enjoy going to work each day!! I love working as a counselor helping people heal from childhood trauma by teaching them how to move past the hurt into a more stable and peaceful experience with confidence. I am licensed in Illinois, Missouri, and Florida.
In a first therapy session, clients can expect to discuss their reasons for seeking help and share their concerns in a safe and confidential environment. I may ask questions to understand the client's background, experiences, and goals for therapy. This initial meeting is also an opportunity for clients to ask questions about the therapy process. Overall, the focus is on creating a supportive space for clients to begin their healing journey.
I believe I make a good therapist due to my own life experiences, which have given me valuable insights and empathy for my clients' struggles. My non-judgmental approach creates a safe space for open dialogue, allowing clients to express themselves freely. I also incorporate humor when appropriate, which helps lighten the mood and fosters connection. Above all, my genuine care for my clients’ well-being drives me to support them in their journey toward healing and growth.
With over 17 years of experience, my counseling practice specializes in addressing complex trauma. I help clients navigate anxiety and depression stemming from childhood experiences and dysfunctional family dynamics, as well as support individuals recovering from abusive relationships. I also work with couples and blended families to strengthen their connections and overcome challenges. Working together, we will focus on alleviating the symptoms of complex trauma, empowering you to reclaim your identity and engage fully in the present. I prioritize establishing a nurturing professional relationship and a safe environment, firmly believing in each person's inherent ability to heal and thrive. In addition to my trauma-focused work, I draw on my background in organizational development to offer career counseling. I assist clients in clarifying their career goals and developing strategies to tackle the unique challenges women face in leadership roles. My approach combines strategic insights with practical tools, creating a supportive space where clients can gain clarity on career and workplace issues. My research interests encompass women's advancement, leadership transitions, cultural improvement, and leadership burnout.
Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) I help clients accept their thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them. I guide clients in identifying their values and committing to actions that align with those values, even when faced with difficult emotions. Through mindfulness techniques, clients learn to observe their thoughts without judgment, allowing them to take meaningful steps toward their goals and improve their well-being. This approach fosters self-understanding and promotes a more fulfilling life.
NARM, or NeuroAffective Relational Model, is used in therapy to address the impact of developmental trauma on a person’s emotional and relational functioning. I guide clients in exploring their emotional and relational patterns, helping them connect with their feelings and bodily sensations. By fostering awareness of these patterns, clients can develop healthier relationships and a stronger sense of self. The process emphasizes compassion and understanding, enabling individuals to heal from past traumas and move forward in their lives.
