Chris Dunsmuir
I am a passionate professional who believes in continuous improvement, but also appreciating progress. I try to be an ally to my clients when and where I can, but will absolutely point out blind spots when I see them. I use Narrative therapy as my main philosophical approach to client situations, which really allows us to work together towards a resolution or answer. I have worked with Doctors, Lawyers, and many other professionals who needed an alternative perspective. I look forward to hearing your story and working with you to make changes.
First session
The first session with me is question heavy because I want to learn about you and what has brought you to me. I like to learn as much as I can about people and situations that they are discussing. I try to hold a lot of space early on in order to hear and learn as much as possible.
Strengths
I am great at holding space and allowing silence to be used in helpful ways, but I am always willing to call out inconsistencies and blind spots when I see them. I try my best to be as neutral as possible when clients tell me things so that I can give feedback as accurately as possible but not try to direct someone's life choices to my personal preferences. I treat sessions like a collaborative effort to work towards a person's goals.
Ideal clients
I am not sure what an ideal client is for me because I have worked with many different types of people about many different things. Come in open-minded and ready to hear feedback about things you say is all I could really hope for with any client. Anxiety and substance use issues have been some of my most rewarding issues to work with.
Treatment methods
Narrative
I believe that everyone has stories to tell, and every story has value to us. By talking about these stories and the effects of the experiences on us, we can learn how we can move forward with these experiences. Our life is very often multiple things occurring simultaneously and we need to be aware of this in many different ways.
