I am a Licensed Professional Clinic Counselor in MN with 20+ years experience with inner city youth, adults, couples and families. I am originally from Iowa, lived in Alaska for 18 yrs. where I received my Masters Degree from University of Alaska- Fairbanks. I enjoy the outdoors and recumbent biking. I enjoy clients who are willing to try their best, share openly & honestly and state what they need to feel comfortable in our session. I love blunt honesty and please ask questions and I will do my best to answer them.
I work hard to be a good listener work to help you feel comfortable to ask me questions. I see the client-therapist relationship as most important, since without a good relationship it doesn't go as well, but may take time to grow this together. I ask you to share openly and freely to your comfort level.
Compassion and willingness to go to the difficult places with clients and walk alongside them to help them through this situation, trauma, break up, struggle, etc.
I was trained by John and Julie Gottman (2003) Method for Couples Therapy. I enjoy helping with couples learn to communicate their needs, work through conflict and grow awareness of one another’s needs & strengths and hopes & dreams. I enjoy helping couples who come in after an affair and desire to work through this together.
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression & Anxiety to grow awareness of negative thought distortions and teach how to frame with a new perspective that is helpful to move forward again. Often use with stuck thinking, unable to move forward and unawareness of blind spots that others see readily. I use CBT as a base therapy as it is helpful throughout therapy.
I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy and use regularly. I am trained in 4 Blinks, Somatic Processing, Trauma-Focused CBT and use other skills (grounding, mindfulness, ...) to help others experience freedom from trauma and enjoy their living to its fullest.
My faith in Jesus Christ is an overlay of what I do in therapy. My goal is treat everyone with care and respect they deserve and to do my best to help them in whatever we work on. I may use examples in scripture that are similar to your situation that can be helpful. I was raised in the church, been an elder, teacher and led men's ministries for many years. I am happily married for many years. I may offer to pray for you or you may ask me and I will gladly do so, as I believe in the power of prayer.
