Stephen Garlington
I am a mature African American male therapist with over 20 years of clinical experience working with individuals, couples and families. I look forward to helping my clients better understand the underlying issues causing them discomfort and challenging their success in life. We will work together to find effective solutions and celebrate even your smallest accomplishments. I believe in mutual respect, being non-judgmental and "keeping it 100"! Let's get to work. PS: For the Teach for America Corps member's, please be advised that I was employed at a Regional Office of Education for over 12 years in a clinical capacity . I worked with teachers, school administrators, students and parent groups. I understand school cultures, the geopolitical pressures and expectations that are often placed on the teaching profession to achieve academic outcomes.
I focus on being strategic and client focused. In this way, we can hopefully achieve a good understanding of the underlying issue(s) causing you discomfort and/or stress.
First session
During our first session, I will review my commitment regarding confidentiality and being non-judgmental. .We will get to know each other and I will learn more about the challenges that brought us together. I will take time to carefully listen as you provide more information about yourself and current circumstances. We will also discuss your expectations for therapy.
Strengths
I believe that getting off on the right foot is most important. My first goal is to work hard to establish a supportive and safe environment for our sessions. In other words, create authenticity and trust with my clients. I believe that you will find me sincere, thoughtful and sometimes funny. I focus on being strategic and client focused. In this way, we can hopefully achieve a good understanding of the underlying issue(s) causing you discomfort and/or stress.
Ideal clients
My dream client is one who is open to taking reasonable risks at being transparent and vulnerable. A client who is willing to work on accepting the challenge of change and is open to critical introspection. I work diligently to establish a positive rapport and appreciate clients who are open to establishing trust, and having honest and open communication with their therapist. I encourage clients to move out of their "comfort zones" to take risks that are likely to propel them toward their treatment goals. I want clients to be patient as change can take time. I want clients to join me in celebrating even their smallest successes.
Treatment methods
Eclectic
I don't favor a "one size fits all" approach. I will use various treatment methods based on my assessment of your preferences and my experience insights. We will work as a team to fine-tune our treatment collaboration to achieve the best outcomes.
