First sessions are primarily a venting experience for the client. Unburdening themselves to a stranger can be both daunting and relieving. The first session is also a rapport-building session to help the client feel safe to express.
As a provider, I have been called insightful, challenging, and empathetic. I will also tell you my weaknesses. I feel I sometimes give too much homework before a client is invested. And I feel that I can encourage a client to move past a point in therapy before they are ready. Sometimes, it is the kick they needed. Other times, it makes them realize they aren't ready for change.
The client who seeks therapy because they are in need of long-lasting change. For sustainable solutions to their issues. Willing to put in the work outside of therapy to apply new perspectives on how to resolve old problems.

This was my first therapy session and I felt very comfortable. He was humorous and I feel like we really tackled some big issues right off the bat. He used metaphors that helped me grasp the concept of what he was saying. Definitely coming back!
