Ijeoma "IJ" Olewe
Ijeoma Gladys Olewe, (PMHNP-BC). I am a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based mental health care to adolescents and adults. My practice focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, mood disorders, trauma-related disorders, and other psychiatric concerns. With over 14 years of nursing experience, I bring a robust foundation to my work as a Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner, specializing in psychiatric mental health care. My extensive background spans inpatient and outpatient settings, maximum-security prisons, and assisted living facilities. This diverse expertise fuels my dedication and enhances my ability to establish meaningful connections with clients and their families. I believe in a patient-centered approach that combines clinical expertise with active listening and collaboration. My goal is to create a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where clients feel heard, understood, and empowered in their mental health journey. Together, we develop individualized treatment plans tailored to each person's unique needs, goals, and circumstances. Ultimately, I am committed to helping individuals achieve improved mental wellness, enhanced quality of life, and lasting emotional well-being through comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and ongoing support.
First session
Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and begin understanding your mental health needs and goals. During this session, we will discuss your current concerns, symptoms, medical and mental health history, medications, lifestyle factors, and any previous treatments you may have received. The initial evaluation typically lasts up to 60 minutes or sometimes less and is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of your unique situation. Together, we will identify your goals and develop a personalized treatment plan that may include medication management, recommendations for therapy, lifestyle modifications, or additional assessments if needed. My goal is to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where you feel comfortable sharing your experiences. Please feel free to ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have throughout the process.
Strengths
I bring a compassionate, patient-centered approach to every session. I believe that effective mental health care begins with listening, understanding, and building a trusting therapeutic relationship. My goal is to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where clients feel comfortable discussing their concerns and actively participating in their treatment. What sets my approach apart is the combination of evidence-based psychiatric care and personalized attention. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, I work collaboratively with each client to understand their unique experiences, strengths, challenges, and goals. I take the time to thoroughly evaluate symptoms, educate clients about their treatment options, and develop individualized plans that align with their needs and preferences. As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I focus on treating the whole person—not just the symptoms. I strive to empower clients with knowledge, practical strategies, and appropriate treatment interventions that support long-term emotional wellness, improved functioning, and a better quality of life. My clients can expect thoughtful care, open communication, and a commitment to helping them achieve meaningful and lasting progress.
Ideal clients
I am best positioned to serve adolescents and adults who are seeking compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric care for concerns such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood disorders, stress-related conditions, trauma-related symptoms, and other mental health challenges. Many of my clients are looking for clarity about their symptoms, guidance in understanding their mental health, and support in finding an effective treatment plan. I work particularly well with individuals who are motivated to improve their emotional well-being, open to learning about their mental health, and willing to actively participate in their treatment. Whether you are seeking help for symptoms that have recently emerged or challenges that have been present for years, I strive to provide a supportive environment where you feel heard, respected, and empowered. My practice is a good fit for clients whose goals include improving mood, reducing anxiety, enhancing focus and productivity, developing healthier coping strategies, improving relationships, increasing self-awareness, and achieving greater balance in their daily lives. Together, we create a personalized treatment plan that aligns with your goals, values, and unique circumstances, with a focus on achieving sustainable, long-term wellness.
Treatment methods
Psychoeducation
Psychoeducation is a core component of my practice because I believe that understanding your mental health is an important step toward improving it. Many individuals experience symptoms without fully understanding what is happening, why they are experiencing those symptoms, or what treatment options are available. My goal is to provide clear, evidence-based information that helps clients make informed decisions about their care. During our sessions, I take time to educate clients about their diagnosis, symptoms, treatment options, medications, potential side effects, lifestyle factors, and coping strategies that may support recovery and overall well-being. I encourage questions and open discussion so that clients feel confident and actively involved in their treatment plan. By increasing knowledge and understanding, psychoeducation helps reduce stigma, improve treatment adherence, strengthen self-awareness, and empower clients to recognize patterns, manage symptoms more effectively, and make choices that support their mental health goals. I view treatment as a collaborative partnership, and psychoeducation helps ensure that clients are informed, engaged, and equipped with the tools they need to achieve lasting progress.
Trauma-Informed Care
I practice from a trauma-informed perspective, recognizing that past experiences can have a significant impact on mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Trauma-informed care is not solely focused on traumatic events themselves; it is an approach that emphasizes safety, trust, collaboration, and respect in every interaction. In my practice, I strive to create a supportive and nonjudgmental environment where clients feel heard, valued, and empowered. I understand that trauma can influence how individuals experience emotions, relationships, stress, and even physical health symptoms. Rather than asking, “What is wrong with you?” I seek to understand, “What has happened to you, and how has it affected your life?” Using a trauma-informed approach, I work collaboratively with clients to understand their experiences, identify strengths, and develop treatment plans that align with their goals and comfort level. I prioritize transparency, informed consent, and shared decision-making, ensuring that clients have an active role in their care. When appropriate, I provide education about the effects of trauma, symptom management strategies, and treatment options that support healing and resilience. My goal is to foster a therapeutic relationship built on trust and respect while helping clients develop the skills, insight, and confidence needed to move toward greater emotional well-being, stability, and recovery.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment approach that helps individuals understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. While my primary role is psychiatric evaluation and medication management, I often incorporate CBT-informed techniques into sessions to help clients develop practical skills for managing symptoms and improving daily functioning. In my practice, I help clients identify unhelpful thought patterns, beliefs, and behaviors that may contribute to anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, or other emotional challenges. Together, we explore how these patterns influence emotions and actions and work to develop healthier, more balanced ways of thinking and responding to life's challenges. CBT techniques may include recognizing cognitive distortions, reframing negative thoughts, developing problem-solving skills, setting achievable goals, improving coping strategies, and building healthier behavioral habits. I also provide psychoeducation to help clients better understand their symptoms and learn tools they can apply outside of sessions. My goal is to empower clients with practical, evidence-based strategies that promote resilience, increase self-awareness, improve emotional regulation, and support long-term mental wellness. By combining medication management with CBT-informed interventions when appropriate, I help clients develop a comprehensive approach to achieving their mental health goals.
