Jess Hickey
Life can sometimes feel like navigating unfamiliar terrain. Whether you're carrying the effects of trauma, adjusting to a new season of life, or feeling overwhelmed by the challenges in front of you, you don't have to find your way alone. My goal is to provide a supportive, nonjudgmental space where you can pause, reflect, and move forward with greater clarity and confidence. I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, stress, relationship challenges, and life transitions. I have specialized experience supporting military service members, veterans, and individuals impacted by trauma, as well as those navigating pregnancy, postpartum adjustment, infertility, pregnancy loss, and other maternal and perinatal mental health concerns.
First session
Therapy is a journey, and I view my role as serving as a guide and companion as you navigate the path ahead. Together, we will explore the experiences that have shaped you, identify obstacles that may be keeping you stuck, and develop tools to help you move toward healing and growth. While I cannot determine the destination for you, I can help illuminate the path, offer support when the road feels uncertain, and help you recognize the strengths and resilience you already carry within you. Our first session will be a chance to get to know each other, explore where you hope to go and what barriers might be getting in the way. We will discuss what brings you to therapy, and some of your hopes for our work together. We will take this time to make sure we are a good fit to partner on this journey together.
Strengths
My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and tailored to your unique needs and goals. I believe meaningful change happens when you feel safe, heard, and understood. No matter where you are on your journey, therapy can provide an opportunity to gain deeper self-understanding, build on your strengths, and move toward a life that feels more connected to your values and aspirations. If you're looking for a therapist who understands the complexities of trauma, military culture, or the emotional challenges that can accompany pregnancy and parenthood, I would be honored to serve as a guide and companion on your journey toward healing and growth.
Ideal clients
I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, stress, relationship challenges, and life transitions. I have specialized experience supporting military service members, veterans, and individuals impacted by trauma, as well as those navigating pregnancy, postpartum adjustment, infertility, pregnancy loss, and other maternal and perinatal mental health concerns. Beyond these specialties, I am open to scheduling an initial appointment with anyone seeking help to see if we could be a good fit together.
Treatment methods
Interpersonal
Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) is an evidence-based, attachment-focused approach that explores how relationships, life transitions, and social supports influence emotional well-being. IPT helps clients identify patterns in their relationships, strengthen communication skills, navigate interpersonal conflicts, process grief and loss, and adjust to major life changes. Grounded in attachment theory, this approach recognizes the importance of secure, supportive connections in promoting mental health and resilience. I specialize in using IPT to treat depression as well as reproductive mental health concerns, including fertility challenges, pregnancy, postpartum adjustment, pregnancy loss, and the emotional impact of reproductive transitions. Together, we work to build stronger relationships, enhance support systems, and reduce symptoms while fostering greater connection and well-being.
Cognitive Processing (CPT)
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is an evidence-based treatment for trauma and PTSD that helps individuals identify and challenge unhelpful beliefs that may develop after traumatic experiences. By examining patterns of thinking related to safety, trust, control, self-esteem, and intimacy, clients can reduce symptoms, process trauma more effectively, and move toward healing and recovery. I specialize in helping clients use CPT to build resilience, self-compassion, and a stronger sense of empowerment after trauma.
Prolonged Exposure Therapy
Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy is an evidence-based treatment for trauma and PTSD that helps clients gradually confront trauma-related memories and situations they have been avoiding. By reducing avoidance and processing traumatic experiences in a safe, structured way, PE can help decrease PTSD symptoms, lessen anxiety, and restore a sense of confidence and control. I specialize in helping clients use PE to move toward healing, resilience, and recovery after trauma.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based approach that helps clients understand how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence one another. By identifying and changing unhelpful patterns, clients can develop healthier coping strategies, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and improve overall well-being. I use CBT in a collaborative and individualized way to help clients build practical skills and create meaningful, lasting change.
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based approach that helps clients develop psychological flexibility by learning to respond more effectively to difficult thoughts and emotions. Through mindfulness, acceptance, and values-based action, clients can reduce the struggle with emotional distress and build a more meaningful, fulfilling life. I use ACT to help clients increase resilience, self-compassion, and alignment with what matters most to them.
