Cherlyn Walker

LPC (she/her)17 years of experience

Hello! My name is Cherlyn Walker, and I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas for 17 years. I specialize in trauma, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and issues related to major life transitions. However, I also have significant experience with work-related problems, career counseling, and relationship issues, among others. I am skilled in a wide range of evidence-based clinical interventions. I try to tailor my approach to your needs and goals, and will frequently seek input from you regarding your level of comfort during our sessions. Initiating the process of seeking therapy can be daunting. However, you have already taken that first step by reaching out. I look forward to learning more about and how I can help. Regarding my background, I am originally from Houston, Texas. I have been married to my husband, Chris, since 2009. We have 3 dogs and 2 cats. My hobbies include studying fitness, languages, traveling, painting, and reading. I hope to meet you soon.

First session

Our first session will be an intake. During that intake, it is our time to get to know each other and determine whether we are a good fit. I will ask about your background and treatment history to determine the best way to help you. You will need to have clear goals in mind regarding what you would like to address in therapy. However, if you need help, I can assist in setting goals.

Strengths

I actively listen to clients and help them to identify their goals and strengths. I am good at making clients feel comfortable and heard. I also advocate for clients to ask questions and find their own voice.

Ideal clients

Ideally the client will be in "the driver's seat" at each session. You will decide what we talk about at each session. Coming to therapy with "nothing to talk about" is not going to help you to reach your goals or get better. I will help you decide what you want to work on and we will develop specific goals that you want to achieve. Be prepared to have an idea of what you want life to be like when you are "done" with therapy.

Treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use CBT to help the client identify cognitive errors and challenge negative and distorted thoughts. I use CBT with several other evidence-based techniques as part of an integrative approach.
