LCSW, 7 years of experience
I am James Cherry, a trauma-certified, DBT-certified therapist and clinical supervisor specializing in complex trauma, personality disorders, and relational healing. With a background as a high school educator, I bring a deep passion for learning, psychoeducation, and accessible care into therapy. My practice is neurodivergent-affirming, LGBTQIA+ inclusive, and rooted in evidence-based care that fosters resilience, clarity, connection, and lifelong growth.
You can expect a compassionate, non-judgmental space where your safety and comfort are prioritized. We will take time to understand your unique experiences and ensure you feel heard and validated. We may review history, including past traumas, current concerns, and what brings you to therapy, but will always allow you to share at your own pace. The session will focus on building trust and establishing a collaborative relationship. The focus moving forward may be identifying how the past, present, and future can affect your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, and introducing techniques to help regulate your emotions and ground yourself when feeling overwhelmed. You won’t be rushed into discussing painful memories; instead, we will build the space for you to feel in control of your healing process. The goal of this first session is to set a foundation for future work, where you feel safe, empowered, and supported as you begin your journey toward healing
I utilize evidence-based practices and strive to help my clients build healthy coping skills, improve self-esteem, and empower them to reach their mental health goals. I do this by assisting clients in articulating connections between thoughts, feelings, and actions to understand better where they have been and what direction they now wish to go.
I specialize in working with individuals, couples, and families seeking collaborative, trauma-certified care. My clients often navigate complex trauma, emotional dysregulation, relationship challenges, or identity exploration. Together, we co-create a personalized wellness plan that supports emotional regulation, self-esteem, and relational healing. I’m best positioned to serve those who value authenticity, compassionate support, and structured progress. Whether you're rebuilding after trauma, seeking clarity in relationships, or working toward emotional fulfillment, I offer evidence-based therapy that fosters resilience, confidence, and lasting growth.
I am a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) certified provider specializing in emotion regulation, trauma recovery, and relationship counseling. DBT is a structured form of cognitive behavioral therapy that helps individuals manage intense emotions,
I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional specializing in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), an evidence-based approach for treating PTSD, anxiety, and depression—especially in children, adolescents, and adults with complex trauma. TF-CBT integrates cognitive-behavioral techniques with trauma-sensitive interventions to help clients reframe distressing thoughts, regulate emotions, and build resilience. In individual therapy, I use psychoeducation, coping skills, gradual exposure, and cognitive restructuring to support healing. My trauma-informed approach fosters safety, empowerment, and long-term emotional growth.
As a couples therapist, I specialize in the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)—two evidence-based approaches that help partners rebuild trust, deepen emotional connection, and improve communication. These modalities offer structured tools for conflict resolution and emotionally attuned strategies for healing attachment injuries. I tailor therapy to each couple’s unique needs, balancing logical interventions with relational depth. Whether you're navigating infidelity, communication breakdowns, or emotional disconnection, I provide a safe, affirming space for growth. Helping couples transform their relationships is one of the most rewarding aspects of my trauma-informed practice.
As a trauma-informed therapist, I specialize in Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy to help individuals and families heal emotional wounds and build healthier relationships. IFS is an evidence-based approach that explores the inner system of “parts”—distinct emotional states shaped by past experiences. By fostering compassionate dialogue between these parts, clients gain insight into internal conflicts and develop greater self-leadership. In family work, IFS helps navigate communication breakdowns, behavioral challenges, and unresolved trauma by addressing both relational dynamics and internal patterns. This modality supports emotional regulation, attachment healing, and lasting psychological well-being.
Throughout my experience as a trauma-informed therapist, I’ve seen how Somatic Experiencing therapy helps clients reconnect with their bodies and regulate their nervous systems. This body-based approach supports healing from trauma, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm by focusing on present-moment awareness and physical sensations. In individual therapy, I guide clients through grounding techniques, breathwork, and gentle movement to release stored tension and restore a sense of safety. Somatic Experiencing allows clients to track internal cues, build resilience, and reduce symptoms of PTSD and chronic stress. By learning to listen to the body without judgment, clients develop a more compassionate relationship with themselves and experience lasting emotional regulation.
