Hi, I'm Selina Abraham, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) with over 20 years experience supporting individuals through meaningful change. I hold a Masters in Counseling from Oakland University and have worked extensively with adolescents in school settings as well as adults in private practice. My work centers on helping clients navigate depression, anxiety, and grief with compassion, clarity, and evidence-based care.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

Our first session together is a chance for us to begin building a comfortable, trusting foundation. I want to get to know you as a whole person — not just the concerns that brought you to counseling, but the experiences, relationships, and patterns that shape how you move through the world. During this initial meeting, we’ll spend most of our time on intake questions. These help me gather a solid history and background so I can understand what you’re facing and how to best support you. As we talk, I’ll ask about the challenges that led you to seek counseling, your past experiences with therapy (if any), and the goals you hope to work toward. We’ll also explore important pieces of your story, such as family dynamics, significant life events, and the ways you typically respond to stress. This isn’t a test or an interview — it’s a conversation designed to help me understand your perspective and help you feel grounded in the process. You’re welcome to share at your own pace, and you never have to talk about anything before you’re ready. By the end of our first session, we’ll have a clearer picture of what you need and how we can move forward together. My goal is for you to leave feeling heard, supported, and confident that you’re in a space where real change is possible.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

As a counselor, I bring a deeply attentive and collaborative style to every session. I am an active listener who works to understand not only what clients are experiencing, but how and why their thoughts and patterns have developed over time. I help clients explore the connections between their beliefs, emotions, and behaviors so they can gain clarity, insight, and a stronger sense of personal agency. My approach is grounded in respect, curiosity, and a genuine commitment to helping people feel seen, heard, and understood. What sets me apart is the way I guide clients toward meaningful change without taking over the steering wheel. I believe lasting growth happens when individuals learn to navigate their own internal world, not when a counselor tells them what to do. In our work together, I offer direction, tools, and perspective, but I encourage clients to make their own decisions and take ownership of their progress. This balance — supportive yet empowering, structured yet client‑led — helps people build confidence, develop healthier patterns, and create change that truly belongs to them.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My ideal client is someone who is ready to make meaningful, positive changes in their life and is willing to actively participate in the process. They may be navigating depression, anxiety, grief, or the lingering effects of stressful life transitions, and they’re seeking a therapist who will help them understand not just what they’re feeling, but why those patterns show up. They come in with curiosity, openness, and a desire to better understand their thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors so they can move toward healthier ways of living. This client values a structured, collaborative approach and appreciates the practical nature of cognitive behavioral therapy. They are comfortable engaging in CBT strategies and techniques both inside and outside the session. Because I provide homework after each session, my ideal client is someone who sees this as an opportunity to deepen their insight and strengthen the progress we make together — not as an obligation, but as a tool for growth. Faith can also be an important part of my clients’ lives. As a Christian who respects and honors all beliefs, I welcome clients who want their values and spirituality to be acknowledged in the therapeutic space — whether they share my faith, practice a different one, or prefer a secular approach. Ultimately, my ideal client is someone who wants a therapist who listens deeply, challenges gently, and empowers them to take ownership of their healing. They’re ready to do the work, open to learning new skills, and committed to creating lasting change in their life.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy is the foundation of my work because it gives clients practical tools to understand and change the patterns that keep them feeling stuck. In our sessions, we look closely at the connection between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Many people move through life reacting to situations without realizing the beliefs or assumptions driving those reactions. CBT helps us slow things down, identify those patterns, and explore healthier, more effective ways of responding. I use CBT in a collaborative, hands‑on way. Together, we examine the thoughts that show up during difficult moments — especially the ones that feel automatic or overwhelming — and we work to understand where they come from and how they influence your feelings and choices. I’ll help you challenge unhelpful thinking, practice new skills, and experiment with different behaviors that support your goals. This process is active and engaging, and it often leads to meaningful insight and lasting change. Because CBT is most effective when practiced outside the therapy room, I provide homework after each session. These assignments aren’t busywork — they’re opportunities to apply what we discuss, strengthen new habits, and build confidence in your ability to create change. Clients who benefit most from my approach are those who are ready to participate fully, reflect honestly, and put in the work between sessions. Overall, CBT allows me to offer a structured, empowering, and culturally sensitive approach that helps clients understand themselves more clearly and make meaningful, sustainable changes in their lives.
