New to Grow
I have worked in the front lines of the overdose crisis as a therapist for over 20 years. I have led clinics, founded non-profits, started peer networks, done advocacy and policy work; but always the most meaningful work I've done is working with clients. Being able to walk with someone on their healing journey and see their capacity for change is such an honor. I have the lived experience of healing from severe opioid and stimulant use disorder, anxiety, depression, and complex trauma. I know that my recovery started with people that unconditionally loved me and when I learned to love myself. There is no place for shame or judgement in the work that I do. I will always treat you as the expert on your own experience. I know that reaching out for help is an act of bravery. I am constantly amazed at the resilience of humans. I hope that you will reach out and begin the journey of learning to love yourself.
In our first session we will review confidentiality standards together, to help you understand that your information is safe with me. We will discuss your rights as a client and go through an informed consent process. My approach to therapy is all about trust and I know that is it my job to earn your trust. So then, we will start with getting to know each other and getting to know what makes you feel safe.
I do not define recovery as sobriety. Harm reduction psychotherapy allows for us to find your definition of recovery and what you want your life to look like. We can focus on moderating your use, safer using, stopping one substance while continuing others, or working on your mental health or trauma without abstinance requirements. I have also had clients find a lot of success with empowerment therapy. Understanding the societal systems, events, and people that have taken our power allows us to take our power back.
You would be a great client for me: If you are looking for a therapist with lived experience If an abstinance-based approach to recovery hasn't worked for you If you have been told by a therapist that you are complex You are an affected family member and you are ready to work on your own healing You are a therapist that is grieving the loss of a client If you are adjusting to a disability, chronic health concern, or cancer If you are looking for a queer therapist to help you explore your sexuality or gender You are ready to learn how to love yourself!
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I utilize CBT strategies to help you unlearn negative self talk and learn to love yourself
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
DBT skills can be really useful in increasing emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal skills, and mindfulness. They can help you find peace.
Eclectic
I have found that being trained in evidence based practices gives me wonderful tools to help my clients and I will always adjust the approach based on what you need that day.
Positive Psychology
Positive psychology is the cornerstone to my practice. I am constantly in awe of people's resilience and how they use their strengths to survive almost impossible situations. I know that attending your first session and being willing to try is brave.
