Joseph Dreyer

LCSW25 years of experience

Hello, I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with more than 25 years of experience helping adults navigate life's challenges. I specialize in working with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, and alcohol or substance use concerns. My approach is compassionate, practical, and client-centered, creating a safe space where you can feel heard, supported, and understood. I believe that meaningful change happens through a strong therapeutic relationship built on trust, respect, and collaboration. Clients often describe me as approachable, easy to talk to, and someone who brings a healthy sense of humor into the therapy process when appropriate. While therapy can address difficult issues, I believe growth can happen in an environment that feels comfortable, supportive, and authentic. Whether you're struggling with stress, mood concerns, recovery challenges, or simply feeling stuck, I am committed to helping you build on your strengths and develop practical tools to create lasting positive change.

While therapy can address difficult issues, I believe growth can happen in an environment that feels comfortable, supportive, and authentic.

First session

During our first session, my primary goal is to get to know you and understand what brings you to therapy. I recognize that starting therapy can feel both hopeful and a little intimidating, especially if it's your first experience. We'll spend time discussing your current concerns, personal history, strengths, and what you'd like to achieve through therapy. The first session is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and get a sense of my approach. I strive to create a comfortable, nonjudgmental environment where you can speak openly and feel heard. Together, we'll begin identifying goals and developing a plan that fits your unique needs. Many clients leave the first session with a better understanding of their challenges, a sense of hope, and the reassurance that they don't have to navigate things alone. Most importantly, I want you to feel welcomed, supported, and respected. Therapy is a collaborative process, and our work together will move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Strengths

I bring both experience and flexibility to my sessions. Over the years, I've worked with individuals facing mental health concerns, substance use issues, challenges related to aging and health, veteran-specific concerns, LGBTQ+ issues, and self-esteem struggles. These experiences have taught me that there is no single path to healing. I work collaboratively with each client, meeting them where they are and tailoring therapy to their unique needs and goals. I believe clients are the experts on their own lives, and my role is to provide support, guidance, and practical tools as we work together toward greater wellness and personal growth.

Ideal clients

My ideal client is someone who is ready to take the first step toward feeling better, even if they're unsure what that journey will look like. Therapy isn't about being perfect or having everything figured out. It's about being willing to be curious, honest, and open to growth. I strive to create a supportive, comfortable environment where clients feel heard, respected, and encouraged. Together, we'll work collaboratively to overcome obstacles, build on your strengths, and create a path toward greater wellness and fulfillment.

Treatment methods

Supportive

My approach often incorporates supportive therapy, which means creating a warm, accepting environment where clients feel comfortable being themselves. I believe that healing and growth are most successful when clients feel heard, understood, and empowered. Together, we explore challenges, identify strengths, build coping strategies, and work collaboratively toward improved well-being. I provide encouragement, practical feedback, and a supportive partnership as clients navigate life's transitions and challenges.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

When using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I work collaboratively with clients to understand how their thoughts influence their emotions and behaviors. I help clients identify patterns that may be keeping them stuck and develop healthier ways of thinking and responding to difficult situations. CBT is practical and focused on building skills, so clients leave sessions with tools they can use to better manage stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and other concerns. My approach is flexible, supportive, and tailored to each person's unique goals and experiences.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

When using DBT techniques, I help clients learn practical skills that can be applied in everyday life. Together, we work on staying present in the moment, managing difficult emotions, tolerating stress without making situations worse, and improving communication in relationships. I find that DBT skills can be particularly helpful for clients who feel overwhelmed by emotions, struggle with self-esteem, or are working toward recovery from alcohol or substance use issues. My goal is to help clients build resilience, increase self-awareness, and develop effective strategies for creating lasting positive change.
