I am a licensed therapist with a strong belief in the ability of each of us to grow, change, and heal. No one is immune from hard times and challenges. Sometimes an accepting ear, a little collaboration, and the practice of some new skills can go a long way in aiding us on our way. Change is hard and seeking help can be intimidating, so I seek to respect the efforts of my clients by providing evidenced based care in a comfortable setting. If you are looking for a knowledgeable collaborator in your efforts to quiet your inner critic, have mastery of your strong emotions, and harness your greatest strengths and values, I would love to partner with you.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

Our first session is our opportunity to start creating a clear picture of what you are experiencing and the goals you would like to achieve. It's a time to have your initial questions answered, to tell some of your story, and determine your preferred next steps. Whether this is your first time considering therapy or you have participated in the past, you can expect me to join you where you are, help guide the conversation, and provide recommendations for you to consider.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

In many ways, effective therapy is an art of balancing reflection and meaningful action. I believe that lasting change comes from understanding ourselves more deeply and taking practical steps toward our goals. I have developed a style over the years that creates space to slow down and explore your emotions and experiences to gain needed insight while also helping you develop clear and achievable action plans when you are ready to move forward.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

With years of experience working with adolescents, teens, and adults from varied backgrounds and cultures, demographics cannot identify my ideal client. While I have spent many years working with teen boys involved in juvenile justice and young fathers in challenging situations, I have also been honored to support women veterans, young ladies, and moms experiencing anxiety and depression. While a significant percentage of my practice has led me to work with males with problematic anger expression and emotional challenges that is by no means my only interest or knowledge area. I am a stubborn optimist and believe strongly in each individual's ability to grow, heal and change. Therefore, my ideal client is one that is motivated for growth and open to learning and trying new things in that journey.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is used to help identify the thoughts and beliefs that inform our emotions and reactions and is used in therapy sessions to help learn and practice skills leading to more balanced or helpful thought habits. It is also used to help create action plans as we work to prioritize meaningful steps toward growth and recovery. Within CBT, I have training and experience using the Unified Protocol for the Transdiagnostic Care of Emotional Disorders. This is a lot of big words to describe a semi structured therapy focused on building skills to more effectively manage the strong emotions we may experience in a mindful way.

Trauma Informed Care

With years of experience working with veterans and individuals with challenging stories, I have learned that no one is immune from traumatic experiences. Weather that trauma is experienced on the battlefield, within the home, or in the community, understanding it's impact and implementing practices that help us heal is a key part of my practice.

Motivational Interviewing

Understanding where we are in a change process and grounding our efforts in an internal, personal values based foundation is key to withstanding the inevitable challenges that arise. Change isn't easy and having support that can meet us where we are and help us create a foundational motivation to move forward can be important. In practice I use Motivational Interviewing as a launching pad for collaborative work and as an ongoing focus to come alongside those I serve.

Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS)

As a trained CAMS provider I am able to support customers experiencing troubling suicidal thoughts. CAMS is an intervention directly targeting suicidal thoughts. While many approaches focus on treating depression in hopes of alleviating suicidal thoughts, CAMS addresses these thoughts specifically. It is often a good first step in recovery from suicidal thoughts and the challenges of emotion and cognition surrounding them.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

Often therapy is seen as an effort to get below the surface of the challenges that we face. However, in some circumstances, support in surface level change and goal attainment efforts offer the greatest benefit for change efforts. Solution Focused Brief Treatment can be a stand alone model of care or can be an initial stage of an episode of care when behavior change is needed the most.
