Amy Whistler
Hello, my name is Amy Whistler, and I am a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC). My practice is dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based mental health care for adolescents and adults in a supportive and nonjudgmental environment. I believe that mental health care should focus on the whole person, not just a diagnosis or a list of symptoms. Every individual's emotional well-being is influenced by their physical health, relationships, life experiences, environment, and personal goals. My approach is centered on understanding each client's unique story and partnering with them to create a personalized treatment plan that promotes healing, resilience, and overall wellness. My practice serves adolescents through adults experiencing concerns such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood disorders, trauma, stress, life transitions, and substance use challenges. I utilize a combination of psychiatric evaluation, medication management, supportive therapy, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral techniques, and wellness-focused strategies to help clients achieve meaningful and lasting improvements in their mental health. My goal is to create a safe space where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered to take an active role in their care. Together, we work toward improving emotional well-being, strengthening coping skills, and enhancing quality of life so that each individual can thrive and reach their fullest potential.
First session
Welcome! I understand that seeking mental health care can feel overwhelming, and my goal is to make your first visit as comfortable and supportive as possible. During our initial session, we will spend time getting to know one another and discussing what brings you to treatment. I want to understand your concerns, symptoms, goals, and the experiences that have shaped your mental health journey. We will review your mental health history, medical history, current medications, family history, and any other factors that may be impacting your overall well-being. Because I take a whole-person approach to care, we will explore not only your symptoms but also how your physical health, relationships, work or school life, stressors, lifestyle habits, and support systems influence your mental health. This comprehensive assessment helps me develop a personalized treatment plan that is tailored to your unique needs. At the end of the appointment, we will discuss my clinical impressions, treatment recommendations, and next steps. Depending on your needs, this may include medication management, therapeutic interventions, lifestyle and wellness strategies, referrals, or a combination of approaches. Most importantly, treatment decisions are made collaboratively, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions and share your preferences throughout the process. My goal is to provide a safe, nonjudgmental space where you feel heard, respected, and supported. You do not need to have everything figured out before your appointment. We will work together to identify your strengths, address challenges, and create a path toward improved mental health and overall well-being.
Strengths
One of my greatest strengths as a mental health provider is my ability to see and treat the whole person rather than focusing solely on symptoms or diagnosis. I believe every individual has a unique story, and understand that story is essential to providing meaningful and effective care. My clients can expect a compassionate, collaborative, and judgment-free environment where they feel heard, valued, and respected. As a dual-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner, I bring a unique perspective that allows me to recognize the important connection between mental and physical health. Many emotional and behavioral concerns are influenced by factors such as sleep, chronic medical conditions, hormones, nutrition, stress, relationships, and life circumstances. By considering all aspects of a person's well-being, I am able to develop treatment plans that are comprehensive and individualized. My approach emphasizes building genuine therapeutic relationships. I take the time to listen, understand, and partner with my clients to identify their goals and create realistic strategies for achieving them. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, I tailor treatment to each individual's needs, strengths, values, and preferences. Clients often appreciate that I balance evidence-based psychiatric care with warmth, empathy, and practical guidance. Whether through medication management, supportive therapy, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral techniques, or wellness-focused interventions, my goal is to empower clients to develop resilience, gain insight, and create lasting positive change. What truly sets my practice apart is my commitment to helping clients feel understood as people - not just patients. I believe healing happens when individuals feel safe, supported, and empowered to take an active role in their mental health journey, and I strive to provide that experience in every session.
Ideal clients
I am best positioned to serve adolescents through adults seeking mental health care that recognizes the whole person rather than focusing solely on symptoms or diagnosis. My ideal clients are individuals experiencing challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, mood disorders, life transitions, stress, or substance use concerns who desire a collaborative and compassionate approach to treatment. I believe mental health is deeply connected to physical health, relationships, life experiences, environment, and personal goals. Therefore, my approach emphasizes understanding each client's unique story and the factors that influence their overall well-being. Rather than simply treating symptoms, I strive to help clients identify strengths, build resilience, develop healthy coping strategies, and create meaningful, lasting change.
Treatment methods
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational interviewing is a patient-centered communication style designed to help people explore and resolve ambivalence about behavior change. Rather than telling patients what they should do, motivational interviewing helps them identify their own reasons and motivation for change.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an approach that helps patients identify and change unhelpful thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that contribute to psychological distress. Unlike motivational interviewing, which focuses on enhancing readiness for change, CBT focuses on helping patients recognize how their thoughts influence their feelings and behaviors. It is often not the situation itself that causes distress, but how the person interprets it.
