Hello, I’m Talisha Carter-Moody, a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Master’s in Counseling & Psychology from Troy University. I have over 30 years of experience working with both community members and individuals involved in the justice system. My areas of expertise include depression, trauma, self-esteem, anxiety, grief, bipolar disorder, relationship issues, life transitions, and more. I would say I am an eclectic therapist. I specialize in adults and adolescents utilizing solution-focused techniques, motivational interviewing skills, cognitive behavioral therapy techniques and trauma informed counseling. I currently assist individuals with anxiety, depression, identity concerns, bi-polar and extended grief, as well as those going through life changes such as adjustment to illness, school, divorce and job loss. I believe in creating an environment in therapy that the therapeutic relationship can grow in order for the individual to reach their greatest potential. My counseling atmosphere is warm, supportive and collaborative so each individual can feel at ease as they work through life’s challenges. The goal for most people is to find their “Happy”. I want to help facilitate those individuals to that state of being.
In our first session, we’ll delve into what brought you to seek counseling at this particular moment in your life. We’ll explore the turning points that led you here and what you hope to achieve through this journey. Together, we’ll discuss informed consent, address any questions you may have about the therapeutic process, and clarify your goals and expectations for our work together.
I began my career in corrections, working with a challenging yet vulnerable population, where I learned to navigate resistance without taking it personally and to set firm boundaries in therapeutic relationships. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with diverse groups—teens, women, men, boys, and girls—each with their own unique stories and struggles. My ability to listen without judgment, speak less, and be fully present has been invaluable throughout this journey, allowing me to connect deeply with clients and create a safe space for healing and growth.
While I’m skilled in working with any demographic, my true passion lies in helping those who’ve faced early life challenges and are now seeking to unravel the “why” behind their current circumstances. I am particularly drawn to guiding individuals on their journey to connect the dots between past experiences and present struggles, helping them find clarity, healing, and a deeper understanding of themselves so they can live out their authentic selves, living a happy existence.
In my therapy practice, I have effectively used Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to help clients identify and restructure how they experience life, interact in relationships, and perceive themselves and the world. I start by assessing trauma responses and providing psychoeducation to help clients understand their symptoms as natural responses to abnormal experiences. Using cognitive restructuring, I guide clients in challenging distorted beliefs, helping them reframe their trauma and develop a more compassionate view of themselves. I also focus on improving their relationships by teaching healthy communication skills and encouraging the rebuilding of trust and supportive connections. By addressing core beliefs altered by trauma, I support clients in shifting their worldview and reclaiming a sense of safety and control. Additionally, I emphasize the development of coping strategies and relapse prevention plans to ensure they have the tools to manage distress and maintain progress. This comprehensive approach allows clients to process their trauma and rebuild their lives with resilience and a renewed sense of purpose.
