Dan'Yell Hastick
Hi there! My name is Dan'Yell and I'm excited to be considered for your journey in your mental health. The experiences I have gained over various levels of care started from inpatient all the way to outpatient care. I am happy to assist in my own local community through fundraising programs as well. I like to think that from individual counseling to community action, there are various ways to positively impact individuals in their own personal journeys.
First session
Coming to the first session for therapy is an achievement, whether it is your first time ever, or your first time with a new provider. I acknowledge that in first sessions and tend to take more time to listen and keep the session conversational. I’ll review assessment results as well as forms completed to check if there are any questions as well. Overall, I am looking for a presenting problem and potential goals, while also trying to understand the full picture of a client. The initial session will end with a check in to see if you think I am a good fit for you before scheduling the next session.
Strengths
My approach to therapy relies heavily on collaboration with my clients. I am a professional, but they know themselves best and even while struggling with mental health concerns that needs to be respected. So, there is often more time initially spent gaining as much context to my clients as individuals. As sessions shift towards the working stage, there will be moments of discovery and also accountability. Often thanks to this approach my clients are able to move through finding strategies that assist them with symptom management, or they can begin changes in their lives as they realize they are ready.
Ideal clients
My strengths as a professional align with clients who are open to the therapeutic process. They may have a history of trauma, or may be struggling with adjusting to change or a loss recently in life. These individuals aren't looking for therapy to be indefinite and have a general idea of the changes they would like to see in their life to measure their progress. If a client is willing to put in the effort in and between sessions I have various skills to meet them where they are at session to session, as they understand they do not have to be always making progress. They are open to healing being a process with highs and lows.
Treatment methods
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
This is utilized to assist clients with boundary setting, and increasing stress tolerance when it comes to conflict. If you struggle with people pleasing, this is often a method I use to assist.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
This helps clients with understanding their "internal battles". These interventions often involve some level of visualizing what "part" of you is present given certain factors, and meeting the needs of these "parts" of yourself to live a more fulfilling life. This is often used with clients who struggle to make major changes in their life.
Cognitive Processing (CPT)
This utilizes journal approaches to take specific trauma experiences and "re-write" narratives. In doing so clients have an opportunity to create distance and review how the incident may have impacted them in ways they did not realize.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
This method is helpful for individuals who struggle with regulating their emotions. This approach allows for various interventions that make emotions less scary and become more manageable, while still maintaining your sense of self.
Strength-Based
I utilize this with all clients. This acknowledges that everyone has strength that they bring to their life and bridging strengths into new areas is common discussion. Reinforcing that people have different strengths in different areas of life also helps normalize strengths of others in a clients life as well without minimizing their sense of efficacy.
