Authentic
Open-minded

I’m Roby Murphy, a licensed professional counselor committed to supporting teens, young adults, and individuals navigating life’s many transitions.

I’ve supported hundreds of teens, young adults, and adults through challenges ranging from academic stress and ADHD to anxiety, depression, and major life transitions.

In my work, I focus on creating a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients can share openly and begin building practical tools to manage challenges such as anxiety, ADHD, depression, and stress from major life changes. I believe in meeting clients where they are while helping them uncover their strengths, gain clarity, and develop healthier patterns that foster growth. My goal is to not only help clients overcome obstacles in the moment, but to also equip them with lasting strategies that lead to greater confidence, resilience, and fulfillment in their daily lives.

First session

In our first session, my focus is on getting to know you and understanding what brought you to counseling. We’ll talk through your goals, current challenges, and any background information that feels important for you to share. I’ll ask some guiding questions, but I also give you space to tell your story in your own words. Together, we’ll begin to outline what you’d like to work on and set a direction for our time together. My goal is for you to leave that first session feeling heard, supported, and clear on the next steps in your journey.

Strengths

One of my greatest strengths as a therapist is my ability to create a safe, judgment-free space where clients feel comfortable being their authentic selves. I combine compassion with structure, helping clients not only process their emotions but also build practical, real-world strategies they can use outside of sessions. I draw on evidence-based methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) while tailoring my approach to fit each client’s personality, needs, and goals. What makes me unique is the blend of my experience as both a school counselor and a private practice clinician. I’ve supported hundreds of teens, young adults, and adults through challenges ranging from academic stress and ADHD to anxiety, depression, and major life transitions. This diverse background has sharpened my ability to quickly assess needs, collaborate with families and systems when necessary, and empower individuals to take ownership of their growth. Clients often tell me they appreciate my balance of empathy, honesty, and encouragement, which helps them feel supported while also motivated to make meaningful change.

Ideal clients

My ideal clients are teens, young adults, and adults who find themselves at a crossroads in life—whether they’re navigating school pressures, career changes, relationships, or personal growth. I’m best positioned to serve those struggling with anxiety, ADHD, depression, or the stress of major transitions, and who are ready to work toward building healthier coping skills and stronger self-awareness. Many of the clients I work with come in feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or uncertain about their next steps, and my role is to help them gain clarity, develop practical strategies, and move forward with confidence and resilience.

Treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I frequently use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in both my school counseling role and private practice. CBT has been especially effective with the teens and young adults I serve, as it helps them identify the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. In practice, I guide clients to recognize unhelpful thought patterns, challenge negative self-talk, and replace it with more balanced and realistic perspectives. From there, we work on developing coping skills such as journaling, reframing, grounding strategies, and behavior activation to reinforce healthier patterns. For example, with clients struggling with anxiety or ADHD, I often use CBT techniques like thought logs, goal-setting, and problem-solving exercises to help them build confidence and structure. With clients experiencing depression, I focus on behavioral activation and identifying small, manageable steps that promote motivation and self-efficacy. Across both school and private practice, CBT provides a flexible framework that I can adapt to each client’s age, developmental level, and presenting concern, making it a cornerstone of my therapeutic approach.
