Jeni Dames
I became a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner because I wanted to help people with battles others don't see. I pride myself on being empathetic and compassionate while ensuring my clients receive safe, high-quality care.
I pride myself on being empathetic and compassionate while ensuring my clients receive safe, high-quality care.
In addition to prescribing medication, I also make holistic recommendations when appropriate, such as dietary supplements, exercise, tips for sleep hygiene, outlets for stress relief, and addressing hormonal imbalances.
First session
Our first appointment together will involve getting to know you and what motivated you to seek psychiatric care. We will discuss symptoms- their onset, duration, severity, treatment history, setting(s) where you have received treatment, prior treatment modalities, and the efficacy of those treatments. This is a great time to share your goals or any questions or reservations you have about your treatment. It is also important for me to know about past negative healthcare experiences as these can shape our feature experiences and I want to be sensitive to that.
Strengths
My full-time role as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is in a community mental health clinic—this has provided me with significant experience treating the full spectrum of psychiatric disorders. Before becoming an NP, I worked as a bedside nurse for 13 years in a variety of settings, each providing invaluable life experience and advanced nursing knowledge. Many medication-related factors can be frustrating for clients. Because of this, it has become my practice to provide my clients with all the possible treatment options, assist with weighing the risks and benefits, and ensure my clients are provided with the opportunity to express what they want and what is a priority for them in regards to their treatment.
Ideal clients
Clients with the following diagnoses are ideal: - Mood disorders: bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, adjustment disorders - Anxiety disorders: generalized anxiety disorder, OCD, panic disorder, excoriation disorder, trichotillomania - Post-traumatic stress disorder - ADHD Clients struggling to navigate transitional life stages, parenting/co-parenting, divorce/separation, and circumstantial life stressors are also ideal clientele for therapy modalities I provide in combination with medication management.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
This form of therapy explores how your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are connected. Often, by looking at current circumstances or stressors in your life, we can identify thinking patterns that, if changed, can help prevent negative emotions or change unwanted behaviors.
Trauma-Informed Care
Having a provider who understands that they may not know every experience you've had, or how those experiences continue to affect you, is truly important to me. This is at the forefront of my mind while we work together.
Supportive
This is when we discuss what you deal with day to day. I support you emotionally with your current struggles, and we can discuss methods to help you cope with these challenges and reach optimal functioning.
