Lori Fuqua

LPC (she/her)5 years of experience

I am a compassionate, empathetic, and creative mental health counselor who believes in meeting each person where they are with understanding, respect, and an open mind.

I believe healing is not about perfection, but about progress, building courage, and learning to meet ourselves with compassion while taking responsibility for the changes we wish to make.

I strive to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where individuals feel heard, valued, and empowered to explore their experiences, build resilience, and discover their strengths. My approach integrates mindfulness, empowerment, and evidence-based therapeutic strategies. I encourage clients to develop greater self-awareness, emotional regulation, healthy coping skills, and a deeper understanding of the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I believe growth requires both compassion and courage - the ability to accept ourselves as we are while remaining open to becoming who we want to be. Through empathy, mindfulness, creativity, and empowerment, I hope to help individuals embrace their imperfections, take accountability for their choices, and recognize the change is possible, even when the journey feels difficult.

First session

From our very first session, my goal is for you to feel heard, understood, supported, and empowered. You’ll have a safe, welcoming space to share your story, explore your feelings, and be met with empathy, compassion, and understanding—without judgment or pressure. Together, we’ll begin to uncover what matters most to you, recognize your strengths, and explore the patterns or challenges that may be holding you back. You’ll leave knowing that your feelings matter, your voice is valued, and you don’t have to navigate your journey alone. My hope is that you walk away feeling lighter, more self-aware, and hopeful about what’s possible. Most importantly, you’ll begin to feel ready to embrace change, invest in your growth, and take meaningful steps toward becoming the best version of yourself. This is the beginning of your journey toward healing, clarity, confidence, and lasting growth—at your own pace, with support every step of the way.

Strengths

I believe in the power of acceptance and accountability - honoring where we are while recognizing our ability to grow, make intentional choices, and create meaningful change. Through creativity, collaboration, and mindfulness, I help clients explore new perspectives, embrace their individuality, and build confidence in their ability to navigate life's challenges. My goal is to empower each person to recognize their inherent worth, cultivate self-compassion, strengthen their relationships, and move toward a life that feels more balanced, authentic, and fulfilling. I believe healing is not about perfection, but about progress, courage, and learning to meet ourselves with compassion while taking responsibility for the changes we wish to make.

Ideal clients

My ideal client is someone who is open to self-discovery, willing to embrace personal growth, and ready to take meaningful steps toward change. They may be navigating anxiety, struggling with anger management, feeling overwhelmed by emotions, or noticing patterns in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that no longer serve them. They are curious about understanding themselves on a deeper level and want to explore how their internal experiences influence their responses, relationships, and everyday lives. I enjoy working with individuals who are ready to build self-awareness, develop healthier coping strategies, and learn to respond to life's challenges with greater intention rather than react out of fear, frustration, or emotional overwhelm. These clients may be seeking tools to manage anxiety, regulate emotions, communicate more effectively, strengthen boundaries, or approach difficult situations with increased confidence and resilience. My ideal client does not need to have everything figured out or feel completely ready for change. Rather, they are willing to show up, be curious, explore uncomfortable feelings, and take accountability for their choices while extending compassion to themselves throughout the process. They understand that growth can be challenging and are open to learning new skills, challenging unhelpful thought patterns, and practicing different ways of responding to life's stressors. Ultimately, my ideal client is someone who wants more than simply to manage symptoms. They want to understand themselves, create meaningful change, experience more joy, strengthen their relationships, and face life's challenges with greater courage, self-awareness, and emotional resilience.

Treatment methods

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

This is an action-oriented psychotherapy that helps you accept your thoughts and emotions rather than fighting them, while aligning your daily behavior with your personal values. ACT builds psychological flexibility—your ability to stay open to the present moment and act according to what matters—using six key processes: Acceptance: Opening up and allowing unpleasant or unwanted feelings, memories, and urges to come and go without trying to suppress or avoid them. Cognitive Defusion: Learning to "unhook" or distance yourself from negative thoughts so you see them as harmless mental events rather than absolute truths. Being Present (Mindfulness): Bringing conscious, non-judgmental awareness to the current moment. Self-as-Context: Recognizing that you are more than just your thoughts, feelings, or past labels. Values: Identifying what truly matters to you deep down (such as relationships, integrity, or health). Committed Action: Taking concrete, step-by-step actions guided by those values, even when discomfort shows up.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

This is a structured, goal-oriented form of psychotherapy that helps people identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. The core principles of CBT are: The Connection Loop: Your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are deeply interconnected. Changing how you interpret a situation can change how you feel and act, even if the situation itself does not change. Present-Focused: CBT focuses primarily on current life issues and practical solutions rather than deep exploration of the distant past. Active Practice: Treatment involves collaborative goal-setting and "homework" (such as practicing new coping skills or journaling thoughts) between sessions.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

This approach empowers clients to lead sessions while therapist provides a supportive environment for self-discovery. The main components of person-centered/humanistic therapy approach are unconditional positive regard that provides non-judgmental acceptance and support from the therapist, genuineness where therapist is open, honest, and authentic, and provides empathic understanding

Compassion-Focused

This approach helps people manage feelings of shame, self-criticism, and emotional distress. Key attributes of compassion-focused therapy are noticing suffering when it arises, being emotionally moved by distress, understanding the causes and nature of the suffering, developing a non-judgmental approach with yourself, building distress tolerance by staying present with difficult or painful emotions, and caring for your well-being by taking wise, committed action to relieve and prevent suffering.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Mindfulness-based therapy is an evidence-based type of talk therapy that blends present-moment awareness and meditation with traditional cognitive and behavioral techniques. Mindfulness-based key attributes are: Non-judgmental awareness: You learn to notice your thoughts, feelings, and body sensations without labeling them as good or bad. Breaking the auto-pilot: Instead of reacting automatically to stress or sadness, you create a mental pause to choose how to respond. Changing your relationship to pain: The goal is not to force difficult thoughts away, but to accept them and let them pass without spiraling.
