Jerry Boston
It's important that people feel understood, accepted, and that their issues are addressed in compassionate and effective ways. I have always been able to relate well to people from all ages and from all walks of life.
Treatment is always individualized, and my goal is to not only help you feel better in the present, but to equip you with tools to enable you to experience meaningful and lasting change as you go forward in life.
I have also been fortunate to be able to establish a good rapport and a collaborative therapeutic relationship with those I have worked with over the years, both male and female. Treatment is always individualized, and my goal is to not only help you feel better in the present, but to equip you with tools to enable you to experience meaningful and lasting change as you go forward in life.
First session
Clients are informed as to how the therapy process works and are always free at any time to ask questions. In the first session we begin to get to know one another, identify what a person's treatment needs are and start to formulate treatment goals. I try to make this a comfortable experience for everyone, and when they leave the session, I want them to feel that they have been understood and that have good handle on what they hope to achieve in the therapy process.
Strengths
I am an empathic listener, and I take a systematic and thorough approach in my work with people. Every session and every case is different, so every treatment approach is tailored to each individual. I like to provide handouts and literature to the people I work with so that they have something to refer to between session. I primarily utilize Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) with other modalities mixed in, depending on one's needs. Many research studies done over the years have found that CBT is the most effective treatment approach for many different types of issues.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who is dedicated to learning and to doing the work. But people have to be open and be willing to share everything about themselves. Although this doesn't have to happen right away. Before a person can share their deepest issues, some trust has to be established first, so I never try to get anyone to open up about something before they are ready. I want people to know that if they open up to me, they will only get understanding and a desire to help - judgement free.
Ongoing work together
I have assessment questionnaires that I administer at certain points along the way, starting with the first or second session. But people know when they are feeling better! Also, when someone is feeling better their overall functioning will improve.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
We know from CBT that our thoughts produce our feelings. If our thoughts or thinking are distorted in any way, that can have the effect of distorting our feelings and emotional life. One of the goals of therapy is to help people identify any negative thought patterns they may be unknowingly engaging in and then work to correct these. Also, when someone has been through hardships and/or have been mistreated in the past, those experiences can cause the subconscious part of our minds to be programmed in a certain way that continues to affect us adversely as we go forward in life. Another important part of therapy then, is to bring to light any negative subconscious programming that may be continuing to cause us distress in the present, and once this is done, we can work on transforming those negative programs into ones that are more balanced, and self-empowering which enables us to start feeling and functioning better.
