Hi, I’m Tanika Montgomery, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and the owner of Crowned Therapy, LLC, a private practice in Semmes, Alabama. I specialize in helping individuals, couples, adolescents, and families navigate relationship challenges, life transitions, emotional difficulties, and family dynamics. At Crowned Therapy, we believe therapy should be a safe, collaborative, and empowering space where clients can gain insight, develop practical coping skills, strengthen relationships, and create meaningful change. Our practice is committed to providing compassionate, culturally responsive, and accessible mental health services tailored to each client’s unique needs.

First session

During the first session, clients can expect a welcoming, judgment-free environment where they have the opportunity to share what brought them to therapy and what they hope to change. We’ll begin building a therapeutic relationship, explore their current concerns and relevant history, and identify the areas that are most important to them. Clients will leave the first session with greater clarity about their concerns, an initial understanding of their treatment goals, and a sense of direction for the work ahead. Most importantly, they should feel heard, respected, and supported as we begin creating a personalized path toward growth and meaningful change.

Strengths

One of my greatest strengths as a therapist is my ability to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients feel genuinely heard and understood. I bring empathy, authenticity, strong clinical insight, and a systems-based perspective to my sessions, recognizing that our relationships, families, environments, and life experiences all influence our emotional well-being. I also bring a practical and collaborative approach to therapy. I don’t believe therapy should simply be about talking about problems—I want clients to leave sessions with greater clarity, useful tools, and a sense of empowerment. I meet clients where they are while also encouraging growth, accountability, and meaningful change.

Ideal clients

Clients often come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, disconnected, or uncertain about what comes next. They may be navigating anxiety, relationship or family conflict, life transitions, past experiences, emotional challenges, or difficulty understanding their own thoughts and behaviors. My goal is to help clients gain clarity, develop a healthier mindset, strengthen their relationships, and build practical tools for navigating life. Whether a client wants to heal from the past, improve their relationships, increase confidence, or simply feel more like themselves again, I work collaboratively with them to identify meaningful goals and create a path toward lasting change.

Treatment methods

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I use a person-centered approach by creating a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where clients feel safe to be authentic and explore their experiences at their own pace. I believe clients are the experts on their own lives, and my role is to provide empathy, genuine support, and guidance while helping them identify their strengths, values, and goals. I also integrate systemic therapy into my practice by exploring how relationships, family dynamics, culture, and the environments in which clients live can influence their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This allows us to look beyond the individual and understand the larger systems that may contribute to their challenges or support their growth. Together, we work to increase self-awareness, strengthen relationships, develop healthier patterns, and create meaningful, sustainable change.
