New to Grow
Hello! I'm Jess, and I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I am licensed in both Colorado and Florida. I have been practicing therapy for over 10 years now, and am grateful to say that I genuinely love what I do. I know finding a therapist can feel overwhelming, and it's always a privilege to be able to earn a new client's trust.
In our first session, my primary goal is to help you to feel comfortable with the therapy process. I'll help answer any questions you might have about what to expect from counseling, while getting a little bit of background information on what is bringing you in. I am also ensuring that I am the right fit for you before we get too deep into treatment. I will never accept a new client if I don't truly believe we are a match and I can help. You should leave your appointment feeling heard, understood, and optimistic for your next session.
One of my greatest strengths as a provider is that I'm genuine. I have heard too many horror stories from clients about bad therapy experiences - therapists not giving them any feedback, therapists that overshare their own personal life experiences, and probably worst of all, therapists that come across as judgmental. I want my clients to know that I am in their corner. I will meet you where you're at. If you simply want an hour to vent or to cry, I'm here for it. Prefer constructive criticism? I'm here for that, too. My style tends to be a balance of both - predominantly supportive, but not afraid to ask you the harder questions, too. After all, isn't the point of therapy to Grow?
My ideal client comes to therapy ready to take a good look at their life and do some work. They aren't afraid to ask themselves the hard questions, to sit with the uncomfortable, to consider a different perspective. They have a good awareness not only of their strengths but also the areas of themselves that maybe aren't functioning at their highest potential, and they're willing to do what it takes to improve their lives, relationships, and overall happiness.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is used to help clients replace negative thoughts and behaviors with more productive ways of thinking and acting.
The relationship between the client and therapist is a critical piece to whether or not therapy will be beneficial. Person centered therapy promotes the use of empathy, congruence, and unconditional positive regard in counseling.
We all have a running narrative in our minds of what we tell ourselves about our day to day lives. Narrative therapy is learning to re-write your story in a more positive way. One bad chapter doesn't have to equal a bad book.
Solution focused therapy gives clients real solutions. When I was in grad school, it was suggested that we not give clients advice... but let's be real for a minute, who doesn't appreciate some genuine advice at least occasionally? Solution focused therapy is a good compromise - my job isn't to solve your problems for you, but sometimes we can all benefit from some gentle suggestions for things that might actually work.
