Hi, I'm Jamie, I'm a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner providing psychiatric medication evaluations and management for a wide variety of mental health conditions. Generally people who see me take medications for psychiatric conditions-depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, psychosis, trauma-related symptoms, insomnia, and / or difficulty with executive function but my role isn't limited to prescribing; I provide psychotherapy services for their unique benefits. My approach is patient-centered, creative, integrating a variety of therapeutic modalities, as well as, medication. My approach to medication management is grounded in neuroscience. Before becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner I worked at Stanford University in the Department of Neurobiology in a lab that studied the neural basis of decision-making and value judgment. I transitioned to clinical work to utilize my education and experience helping people rather than furthering research. I draw from a number of psychotherapy modalities that range from more skills-based and goal-oriented ones, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), to more abstract, insight oriented ones, like psychodynamic therapy to look at how our unconscious drives and past experiences affect our mental health. I am a proponent of the benefits of nutrition (not dieting!) and moving our bodies for individuals of all shapes and sizes. Physical activity helps our neurons grow! Our brains are organs and need certain nutrients to function well. Moving our bodies is good for our physical and mental health. I am body-positive and work to dismantle current harmful weightcentric approaches in healthcare. Specialized Training: I treat gender diverse individuals and completed training at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Gender Clinic. I am a WPATH member. This isn't always relevant to treatment for gender diverse folx but is when someone is taking GAHT or hormone suppression medication. I completed a minor in pharmacogenomics at UCSF and utilize pharmacogenomic data for some patients.
In our first session together, here's what you can expect
I like to get to know my patients, gather background information and learn about their goals for treatment. I like to share more about background and answer any questions a patient might have.
The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions
What I hear from patients is that I'm easy to talk to, I listen closely and work to understand what they're going through. I like to provide education about medications and some of the science about what they do. I want my patients to understand the rationale for the treatments I recommend. My overarching goal working with people is to facilitate their understanding of themselves. Looking at how and why we experience and show up in the world as we do can help us be more effective in our lives. I support people in increasing their insight into their experiences and themselves, working to more effectively adapt to their circumstances and continuing to grow in individually meaningful ways. All of these I find to be the foundation of mental health.
The clients I'm best positioned to serve
People who are interested in knowing the rationale and mechanism(s) of medications, are reflective, respond to an analytical approach are generally a good fit. Individuals who are thoughtful, empathetic, creative and looking to develop a better understanding themselves are generally a good fit for my style. I find people who tolerate some discomfort and are open to being gently, compassionately stretched to look at themselves in sometimes challenging ways benefit from my approach. I also implicitly believe in the capacity of everyone to do hard things; discomfort is a touchstone of growth and healing. Folx who are curious, value developing insight and look to develop more insight into themselves are often a good fit. I have an inclination towards a more cerebral, philosophical approach that resonates more with some more than others.
