New to Grow
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in New York State and have provided mental health counseling for over 38 years to people of all ages. I worked as a school counselor for 32 years at the Kenton UFSD, a suburban school district just north of Buffalo, NY. I also provide family and couples counseling at the KenTon Family Support Center. Many people feel stuck at times but do not know how to make changes to allow them to enjoy their lives to the fullest. My approach to counseling incorporates a few styles of therapy to help clients clarify goals, understand their own behaviors and self-talk, and take charge of their future. Clinical areas of treatment include anxiety, depression, ADHD, relationships, stress management, conflict resolution, work and career issues, grief & loss, and anger management. I strongly believe in the dignity and worth of people and am dedicated to helping people find a productive healthy path.
The first session is mainly a rapport building session. I begin with a review of confidentiality concerns and an brief introduction of my professional background. Clients are encouraged to introduce themselves and discuss therapy goals.
I blend my approach to help the client feel comfortable and involved in their own therapy. By doing this my clients learn that they have the skills within themselves to be happy and successful.
An ideal client is an adult who wants to make changes and is willing to put in the time and effort to create change. An ideal client is also open minded and receptive to changing their behavior. An ideal client is interested in learning more about their past and what affects it has upon them. Also, an ideal client is responsible for attending scheduled appointments on time.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is very effective to help change a clients mindset which is helpful to relieve anxiety and depression symptoms. I use it to help clients change the inaccurate core beliefs they have formed over their life. It helps clients create a more opened mind with more options.
Family Therapy
I use an array of Family therapy methods to establish where core beliefs may have been formed and to determine if these beliefs may need to be
Person-centered (Rogerian)
This is the treatment method I was trained in. I like the client to feel in control of the counseling sessions and to set the pace of therapy.
Solution Focused Brief Treatment
Solution Focused Brief Therapy helps clients use the tools they already use successfully in situations where they need improvements. This is the treatment I use at the Family Support Center I work at and was trained by Insoo Kim Berg.
