Kevin Wells
I’m Kevin, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and The 901 Therapy Guy. Memphis born and raised, I believe therapy can be professional without feeling stiff, overly clinical, or disconnected from real life. I work primarily with adults and couples navigating relationships, stress, anxiety, life transitions, communication issues, and those moments when you realize, “Something has to change, I’m just not sure where to start.” My style is conversational, culturally aware, and straight-up while still creating space for you to feel heard and understood. I use Solution-Focused, Narrative, and Motivational Interviewing approaches, but I’m less interested in throwing therapy terms at you and more interested in helping you figure out what actually works in your life. As a Black male therapist, I also understand how culture, family, relationships, career, expectations, and simply trying to hold everything together can shape how we experience the world—and how difficult it can sometimes be to find a space where you can put some of that weight down. Therapy with me can include reflection, accountability, humor, some tough questions, and real conversation. You don’t have to have all the right words when you walk in. Just come as you are. From the now and beyond, we’ll work together to get clear about where you are, where you want to be, and how you’re going to get there.
First session
Yes, the first session is technically an intake, so I will have some questions. But I never want it to feel like an interview where I ask a question, you answer it, and we move to the next box. I want to know what brought you to therapy, but I also want to understand you. What has life been looking like lately? What is working? What is not? What have you been carrying longer than you probably should have? And most importantly, what would make therapy actually feel useful to you? We will talk, connect some dots, and start identifying where you want things to be different. You will also get a feel for me and how I approach therapy because finding the right therapist matters too. My goal is for you to leave the first session feeling like, “Okay, he gets it. We have somewhere to start.”
Strengths
One of my biggest strengths is my ability to connect with people and meet them where they are. I try to create a space where you can be yourself without feeling like you have to perform, have all the right words, or have everything figured out. I bring humor, curiosity, honesty, and a genuine interest in understanding your story. I am a good listener, but I am also not the therapist who is going to just nod my head for the entire session. I ask questions, offer different perspectives, and challenge you when needed. I also believe I am good at recognizing strengths in people that they may not always see in themselves. My goal is for our sessions to feel like real conversations while still doing real work. We can laugh, be serious, sit with the uncomfortable stuff, and figure some things out along the way.
Ideal clients
I tend to connect best with people who have gotten pretty good at handling life, but somewhere along the way realized handling everything is not the same as being okay. Maybe you are the person everybody depends on. Maybe your career is moving, but your relationships are complicated. Maybe you and your partner love each other but keep having different versions of the same argument. Or maybe life just does not fit the way it used to, and you are trying to figure out what comes next. I enjoy working with people who want therapy to feel like a real conversation. You can laugh in my sessions. You can say, “I don’t know.” You can tell me you disagree with me. I actually welcome that. I am not looking for the perfect therapy client. Give me honesty, curiosity, and a willingness to look at things differently. We can work with the rest.
Treatment methods
Solution-Focused Brief Treatment
My goal is to work myself out of your life. Let’s get to work, discover/uncover what may be hindering you, and move forward in your healing together. I gradually look to decrease your need for me in your life.
