Owen Crabtree
Being a young adult can feel like everyone else got a manual you missed. Maybe you're anxious much of the time, or something feels missing or hard in your social life, or things look fine on paper and still feel heavy. I draw on Internal Family Systems and psychodynamic theory to help lighten the load. In plain English: we get curious about the different parts of you (the worrier, the people-pleaser, the one who'd love to disappear into a show) and what each is trying to do. Yes, we'll talk about "parts." No, it doesn't mean anything is wrong with you. We'll also pay attention to what happens between us. If you notice yourself going quiet or trying to keep me happy, that's useful information we can explore together, since it often mirrors how you move through relationships elsewhere. We'll go at a pace that feels manageable, never overwhelming. Therapy with me is a place to understand yourself better and feel more choice in how you live and connect. You're welcome to reach out!
First session
In our first session we will gently explore your reason for seeking therapy, as well as other important areas of your life. We'll go at your pace, and you'll have the freedom to ask questions about me if you'd like. I'm mostly interested in getting to know you, and building a warm, safe relationship with you.
Strengths
I offer a space where you can go at your own pace and explore, without judgement, what's been feeling difficult. I know how to guide our conversations so that meaningful change can occur over time.
Ideal clients
Though I have experience with a wide variety of concerns and client backgrounds, I do my absolute best work with young adults and adolescents who are feeling anxious or experiencing difficulties in their social lives. Perhaps you find it difficult to quiet the worrier inside you. Maybe you keep bumping into the same old arguments with your friends or partner(s), or wish you found it easier to connect in the first place. Maybe being a young adult simply feels huge, as if it's too big a change to hold in your own two hands. Whatever's been going on, I'm here to talk.
Treatment methods
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
I draw mainly from Internal Family Systems theory. In short: we'll explore the different parts of you and help them get along. In doing so, we'll work to help you feel less burdened, and more at peace.
