I'm Dr. Thompson and as a dually trained clinical social worker and marriage and family therapist, I believe in the power of relationships and how our external environment impacts our feelings about ourselves. Are you struggling with where you are in your life? Did you expect to be at another place, but somehow you ended up here? Do you find yourself constantly wondering about things, but never really gaining your footing? You're not alone! Whether it's finishing school, a career change, marriage, divorce, launching children, or another other myriad of transitions we experience, stress can arise and talking through these transitions can be beneficial to not only individual coping but also serve as a benefit to all who you come into contact with. As a therapist who focuses on social construction, I work with individuals on managing anxiety and the expectations we have for ourselves. Particularly for women, society can oftentimes place expectations on us and we have to figure out how to balance so many things in our lives - trying to please everyone. However, normally the person at the center of it is often neglected. In our sessions, we will focus on developing a stronger sense of who you are by creating a safe space to reflect, heal and grow through compassion, understanding and evidence-based techniques.
In our first session together, we will spend time getting to know who you are and what brought you to our sessions together. From there, we will identify areas of focus as we work to make improvements to your overall well-being and quality of life.
My biggest strengths involve seeing each client as an individual and truly empathizing with their experience as a human being. Our world has become so enthralled with the facade of what someone's ideal life should look like that we often fail to see the many things we have to be grateful for. I look forward to uncovering those things with clients so they can rewrite their story that they are proud to share with others.
I focus on women primarily dealing with transitions, identity issues, depression and anxiety. So many women struggle with the expectations that others place on them which can lead to them not feeling good enough. However, I believe each individual has inherent strengths that often times go unnoticed or their voice isn't the strongest voice in their lives. I believe in empowering women's voice and helping them to recognize the inherent power they have in who makes them the person they are.
Narrative therapy allows clients to develop a better understanding of the goals they have for their own lives, free from the expectations of others. This approach empowers clients to be the primary author of the stories they tell others about who they are.
The Gottman method is underscored by decades of research on what makes relationships work. Although primarily designed for couples work, the Gottman method is also helpful in working with individual clients as they navigate different relationships in their lives.
