Hi! I’m Carla Brown, licensed social worker and clinical therapist. I find deep fulfillment in facilitating emotional and psychological growth in others, particularly women and people of color, who sincerely aspire to be better human beings. I’ve provided social work, case management, administrative and psychotherapy services to children and adults for thirty-eight years in Detroit, MI and Charlotte, NC. While on our journey, I’ll provide insight and supportive guidance – in plain language, without judgment - as you do important inner work. This work may involve exploring your values, learning to set boundaries and hold others accountable, recognizing personal powers, and improving the ability to think more flexibly and realistically. Our collaborative venture will ideally result in improved overall health and well-being, as you discover meaningful truths about yourself and how best to cope in this challenging world.
During our first session we'll review personal history that you feel comfortable sharing and start to prioritize the issues you wish to focus on going forward.
I'm very empathetic and nonjudgmental, as I have a firm belief we are generally doing our best in any given moment. With humor, sensitivity, insight, and unconditional acceptance, I strive to create a comforting and trusting environment for you to freely express yourself.
I am most effective working with anyone who strives to be more self-aware and finds passion in learning and exchanging new ideas. I am particularly passionate about working with women and African Americans.
As a humanist clinician, I focus on clients' strengths, supporting their journey toward self-fulfillment. Humanists understand that through intention, resiliency and creativity, people are very capable of successful problem solving. My primary role is to help create a safe space in our sessions for you to explore thoughts and feelings regarding challenging life circumstances. Based on your goals, priorities, and values, I'll also assist with creating and implementing problem solving strategies that ideally lead to an enhanced sense of empowerment and overall wellbeing.
As brilliant as is the human mind, people are still often prone to misperceptions. When this happens frequently or to an intense degree, this can negatively affect our mood, self-esteem, relationships with others, and our world view. My role is to identify, discuss, and help correct these misperceptions, commonly known as cognitive distortions. This results in clients learning how to challenge their own thinking to ensure perceptions are not driven by emotional reasoning, but are instead rooted in objective reality.
