New to Grow
I am Jennifer Murphy, and I offer a variety of services within my practice. I specialize in substance abuse, borderline personality disorder, first responders, trauma, depression, anxiety, couples counseling, and survivors of narcissistic abuse. I use various treatment modalities so that I can offer a tailored treatment plan to my clients versus a cookie cutter approach. I tend to provide a lot of information about diagnosis and treatment. I try to teach my clients many different skills, so they will always have something that works in their toolbox. My number one concern for therapy is that my clients are receiving the best care possible that suits their needs.
Typically, the first session is for information gathering. We will fill out any necessary paperwork and will proceed with an assessment. This assessment helps me determine your diagnosis so that as a team, we can create the most beneficial treatment plan for a client. Of course sometimes things come up as we work through therapy that may change the original treatment plan but if we are going on this journey, we need to have a correct destination point. The diagnosis provides us with that.
I believe that I have had many experiences similar to my clients' throughout my life, which help me empathize with their struggles. I am also a veteran of the US Army, so I handle pressure well. I'm not a stuffy therapist so expect there to be some levity in the sessions. I want clients to enjoy this experience as much as possible. I don't necessarily have a specific approach because I believe that clients will tell me what type of therapist works for them. Even if they have never been in therapy, clients will know what conversations have led to true meaning in their lives and what things they would like to avoid. I give them the space and opportunity to share this with me to establish good rapport.
My favorite clients are those who are open, follow up with homework assignments, and are willing to do the work necessary to improve their lives. I love clients who are clear about what their needs are. I do well with clients who take each session seriously and are focused on self-growth. I prefer clients who know what they want to achieve or at least are willing to think about what version of themselves is their ideal.
Other specialties
I identify as
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
In short, acceptance commitment therapy helps clients identify their values and then encourages them to determine whether their thoughts and behaviors are in alignment with those values or not. The purpose is to get our thoughts and behaviors aligned to our values to lead a more authentic life.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
When using cognitive behavioral therapy, we look at how a client's mindset and/or behaviors may be contributing to their current malaise. Once we identify negative thinking, the client is given a variety of techniques to help them "untwist their thinking".
Couples Counseling
During couples counseling, I focus on compatible values, reducing the risk of break-ups or divorce through a variety of skills such as conflict resolution, problem solving, and frequent displays of empathy and appreciation for both partners.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
I am a certified DBT therapist. What that means is that I teach 4 specific skill sets which help alleviate many symptoms and help clients maintain emotional regulation. The 4 skill sets include distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Gottman method
This type of therapy focuses on avoiding the 4 traps that have been associated with divorce and the antidotes to those problems. It is also a type of therapy that uses a lot of conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
