Hello, I am Teresa! Are you looking for a therapist who will help you find a better balance in your life? If that sounds like you, I am the Therapist for you! I believe in the importance of building rapport with clients. I want my clients to feel as comfortable as possible, and I do my best to achieve this by using a client-centered approach. I use a balanced approach that allows my client to work through current and past issues that are preventing them from moving forward. I tend to use a Cognitive Behavioral approach with an emphasis on Mindfulness. However, I believe in utilizing an approach that is best for my client this may also include Dialectical Behavioral or Solution Focused therapies. Little about your therapist...I have been in the counseling field for over 20 years. I have worked with individuals (ages 5 and up), couples and families. I received my Masters's Degree in Counseling from Webster University in 2004. I have worked in various settings such as community mental health, public/private schools and private practice.
In the first few sessions, we will focus on surface-level concerns while we are getting to know each other.I encourage clients to share what they believe is important; I do not want a client to feel they need to share something if they are not comfortable. Each session may look different because we may address different issues and I will give you different tools to use. You should feel that each session was about addressing your concerns, that you felt heard and understood, and you were given strategies to help you meet your therapeutic goals.
I often hear from my clients that they enjoy my "down to earth" or "relaxed" style. I have a great wealth of knowledge in parenting strategies and development due to my experiences. I enjoy helping clients meet their goals by learning strategies that help them do this and gaining insight into the reasons they may do what they do. I specialize in the following areas: anxiety disorders. depressive disorders, trauma-based issues, grief and loss, parenting strategies, adolescent issues, and adjustment disorders.
I am trained in EMDR and have been utilizing this with client with Anxiety, Depression, PTSD and Adjustment Disorder with great success.
I typically use mindfulness integrated with CBT to remind clients that they have the ability to redirect thoughts and actions to stay present in the moment.
I use the Gottman method method when working with couples, especially in the areas of communication. I have been using this as my primary method for three years.
I have worked with couples for the past 5 years. When working with couples I help them to identify unhealthy behaviors/habits, and teach them strategies to improve communication, conflict resolution, rebuilding trust and increasing quality time.
This strategy I use for clients who are just needing to get through a moment and feel they just need resources/strategies to manage that moment. For clients who struggle financially or time this approach can be utilized. However, if I feel the client would benefit from a long term (6 month) approach I would make the recommendation, but it would not be mandatory.
