Nikki Jefferies
Hi, I'm Nikki Jefferies, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner providing telehealth psychiatric medication management for adolescents (ages 12+) and adults throughout Virginia. I believe every patient deserves to feel heard, respected, and actively involved in their care. My goal is to create a supportive, judgment-free environment where you feel comfortable sharing your concerns. Together, we'll develop a personalized, evidence-based treatment plan that supports your mental health goals, improves your quality of life, and helps you feel your best.
First session
During your first appointment, we'll spend time getting to know you and understanding what brought you to treatment. We'll review your current concerns, symptoms, medical and mental health history, previous medications, family history, lifestyle, and goals for care. For adolescents, I also encourage parent or guardian involvement when appropriate to help develop the best treatment plan. I'll explain my diagnostic impressions, discuss treatment options, answer your questions, and work with you to create a plan that fits your individual needs. Treatment may include medication management, education about your condition, coping strategies, and recommendations for therapy or additional resources when appropriate. My goal is for you to leave feeling heard, informed, and confident about the next steps.
Strengths
I strive to create a warm, welcoming, and judgment-free environment where patients feel comfortable sharing what they're experiencing. Whether you're seeking help for the first time or have tried treatment in the past, my goal is to make you feel respected, supported, and actively involved in your care. I take a collaborative and evidence-based approach to psychiatric medication management. I don't believe in simply writing prescriptions—I take time to explain diagnoses, review treatment options, discuss the risks and benefits of medications, and answer questions so you can make informed decisions about your care. I treat adolescents (ages 12+) and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorders, PTSD, OCD, mood disorders, and other mental health concerns. Because mental health is influenced by many aspects of life, I look at the whole person rather than focusing only on symptoms. Every treatment plan is individualized. My goal is to help patients improve their symptoms, build confidence in their treatment, and achieve lasting improvements in their quality of life.
Ideal clients
I work best with adolescents (ages 12+) and adults seeking psychiatric evaluation and medication management for conditions such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorders, PTSD, OCD, and other mood disorders. My ideal clients are ready to work collaboratively, are open to discussing treatment options, and want to better understand their mental health. While I incorporate supportive therapy, education, and coping strategies into appointments, my primary focus is medication management and helping patients achieve lasting symptom improvement.
Treatment methods
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
I incorporate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-informed principles into psychiatric medication management visits by helping clients identify their values, understand how thoughts and emotions influence behavior, and build practical skills for responding to distress in healthier ways. My primary role is medication management, but I use ACT concepts to support clients in learning how to make choices that align with their goals, even when anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms, or life stressors are present. I may help clients practice acceptance, mindfulness, emotional awareness, and small, realistic behavior changes between appointments.
Motivational Interviewing
I use Motivational Interviewing techniques to help clients explore their goals, strengthen motivation for change, and overcome barriers to treatment. Rather than telling clients what they should do, I take a collaborative, nonjudgmental approach that encourages them to identify their own reasons for making positive changes. This approach can be especially helpful when improving medication adherence, reducing substance use, managing lifestyle changes, or building confidence in taking the next step toward better mental health.
Compassion-Focused
I incorporate Compassion-Focused Therapy principles into medication management visits by helping clients develop greater self-compassion and reduce self-criticism, shame, and guilt. Many people struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, or mood disorders are their own harshest critics. I encourage clients to recognize unhelpful thought patterns, respond to themselves with kindness, and build emotional resilience while working toward their treatment goals. These techniques complement medication management by supporting overall emotional well-being and recovery.
