Michael Rumbach

LCMHC (he/him)6 years of experience

Michael Rumbach brings a lifetime of personal experience of ADHD and mental health struggles to his practice. Combined with training in trauma-informed therapy and an existential philosophy, he creates what tends to be a very affective healing process. I see myself as much a teacher and coach as a therapist. I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mixed with post-modern existentialism. I try to help still the waters so a person can take a breath, collect themselves and be re-dedicated to finding the better version of themselves. It is often stress from trying to control the uncontrollable.

First session

I may not have travelled the exact same path as you, but I am probably familiar with the forest. I fervently believe we create meaning for our lives. I am not the person today without the struggles I've been through, and hopefully I won't be the same person in 10 years that I am today. That should be true of all of us.

Strengths

My path to this profession was long, convoluted, and—often—painful. I was not diagnosed with ADHD until I was nearly 40 and it took several years to learn how to manage. In this field, I'm learning not just how to work with clients, but myself and family members with developmental disabilities.

Ideal clients

I tend to work best with clients who are able combine some solution-focused needs while being open to existential exploration. I can also be very effective with the neurodivergent, as I am neurodivergent myself. I can often speak to and readily identify how and to what extent this condition can have ones life. I can often also help one recognize and address socio/cultural forces that may be aversely impacting ones ability to thrive.

Treatment methods

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

ACT has been empirically shown to facilitate strong change and growth, providing a singular intervention tool one can apply oneself.

Existential

I find existential combined with ACT is a powerful combination. ACT can address the here-and-now changes, while existential helps get to the "why" of the change. Without the "why" it is often hard to sustain.
