Baraka Karanja
I’m a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who believes psychiatric care should feel like a conversation, not a checklist. I provide medication management for adolescents, adults and older adults experiencing anxiety, depression, mood disorders, OCD, and other mental health concerns.
My name is Baraka and I’m a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) with a deep passion for helping people navigate life’s challenges and feel their best mentally and emotionally.
I take the time to understand what you’re experiencing, what matters to you, and what you hope to change. Together, we’ll create a treatment plan that makes sense for you—not just a plan based on a diagnosis.
First session
In our first appointment, you can expect a welcoming and judgment-free conversation where we take the time to understand what brings you in, review your symptoms and history, and discuss treatment options. My focus is psychiatric care and medication management, and I want you to understand the reasoning behind any treatment recommendations rather than simply being handed a prescription.
Strengths
I’m known for creating a safe, supportive space where clients feel heard and understood. I bring a calm, compassionate approach to care, combining evidence-based treatments with a deep respect for each person’s unique journey. Collaboration, empathy, and flexibility are at the heart of my work.
Ideal clients
I work best with adolescents, adults and older adults who are navigating challenges such as anxiety, mood disorders, OCD, ADHD, substance use, or psychotic disorders. Whether you're just starting to seek support or have been managing your mental health for a while, I’m here to meet you where you are. I provide medication management along with practical education and lifestyle strategies to help you build greater stability. My approach is rooted in collaboration, education, and empowerment—because your voice matters in your care, and the best treatment plans are ones we build together.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
CBT is a highly effective for many mental health conditions. It’s often considered the gold standard for treating anxiety, depression, and certain types of trauma. I focus on helping individuals understand and change their negative thought patterns, behaviors, and emotional responses alongside medication management.
Positive Psychology
Positive psychology is about focusing on the strengths, virtues, and practices that allow individuals to navigate life's challenges with resilience, optimism, and a sense of purpose. By focusing on cultivating positive emotions, strengths, and meaningful connections, positive psychology helps people build lives that are not only happy but also rich with purpose and fulfillment.
