New to Grow
Greetings, my name is Sonya McCollum and I have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for over 30 years and specialize in trauma informed care, mood and anxiety disorders and conflict resolution in relationships. While I am open to providing counseling to generally many different individuals, I do specialize in women's mental health, utilizing cognitive behavioral, solution focused and faith based modalities.
My first session consists of sharing a bit about my counseling modalities, and then the remainder of the session is dedicated to learning more about my clients life story prior to meeting with me.
My greatest strength is my ability to create a safe. warm and positive space for my clients, due to my extroverted and outgoing personality.
My ideal clients are women who are motivated to experience change in their mental, emotional and relationship experiences and come to sessions with an open mind and willing heart, who is emotionally insightful, motivated for growth, and seeking a safe space to heal, process, and transform patterns that no longer serve her. She may appear strong on the outside yet internally carry exhaustion, overwhelm, relational pain, or unresolved emotional burdens. Using my faith-based counseling, and relational healing, my ideal client is igh-functioning, responsible but emotionally tired from carrying others, but truggles silently with anxiety, stress, grief, or relational disappointment and seeking balance between strength and vulnerability.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Cognitive Behavior Therapy is instrumental in helping my clients connect their thoughts to their feelings and ultimately their behaviors. This process helps explore the thought processes that lead to undesirable outcomes that clients seek help in wanting to change.
Christian Counseling
My faith based modality integrates psychological counseling approaches with spiritual principles in a clinically appropriate and ethically respectful way. My faith based approach provides purpose and identity, hope during difficult seasons, forgiveness and reconciliation, and oral or values-based decision making.
Solution Focused Brief Treatment
My Solution focused therapy is strength based and focuses on future possibilities rather than analyzing problems or the past. Instead of exploring with my clients “Why is this happening?” I explore “What is working already?” and “What would improvement look like?” and “How can we build on your strengths?”
