Syed Alam
I am a psychiatrist who provides thoughtful, individualized care for adults experiencing ADHD, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, sleep difficulties, and other mental health concerns. My approach is collaborative, respectful, and evidence-based. I take time to understand each person’s symptoms, life experiences, goals, and preferences before developing a treatment plan. I believe patients do best when they feel heard, understood, and actively involved in decisions about their care.
First session
During the first session, I take time to understand your current concerns, psychiatric and medical history, medications, life circumstances, and treatment goals. We will discuss your symptoms in detail and consider possible contributing factors before developing an individualized treatment plan. I want you to leave the first visit feeling heard, respected, and clearer about your diagnosis, available treatment options, and the next steps in your care.
Strengths
I bring a calm, nonjudgmental, and thorough approach to each visit. I listen carefully and work collaboratively with patients rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. My medical and psychiatric training allows me to consider both psychological and physical factors that may contribute to symptoms. I emphasize clear explanations, evidence-based medication management, realistic treatment goals, and shared decision-making so patients understand their options and feel comfortable participating in their care.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is an adult seeking thoughtful, evidence-based psychiatric care for concerns such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, sleep difficulties, or related challenges. I work best with individuals who want to better understand their symptoms, explore treatment options, and take an active role in their care. My goal is to build a collaborative relationship focused on improving daily functioning, emotional well-being, relationships, work or school performance, and overall quality of life.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use CBT-informed strategies to help patients understand how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors can influence one another. During visits, we may identify unhelpful thinking patterns, explore more balanced ways of interpreting situations, and develop practical coping strategies for anxiety, depression, ADHD, stress, and sleep difficulties. These techniques are incorporated into psychiatric care and medication management to help patients improve daily functioning and build skills they can use between appointments.
Motivational Interviewing
I use motivational interviewing to help patients explore their goals, concerns, and readiness for change in a supportive, nonjudgmental way. Rather than telling patients what they should do, I help them identify their own reasons for making changes related to treatment, medication adherence, sleep, substance use, lifestyle, or other behaviors that affect mental health. This approach supports shared decision-making and helps patients feel more confident and engaged in their care.
Supportive
I use supportive therapy to provide a safe, respectful space where patients can discuss stressors, emotional challenges, relationships, and changes in daily functioning. I focus on helping patients identify strengths, improve coping skills, better understand their emotional responses, and develop practical ways to manage difficult situations. Supportive interventions are integrated into psychiatric visits to complement medication management and promote overall stability and well-being.
