Kelly Moffatt

LCSW (she/her)12 years of experience

HI, my name is Kelly. Two of the most difficult things for people to do (including me) is 1.) admit they are struggling, and 2) to ask someone for help. by looking for a therapist you have taken the first step. In 12 years as a social worker I have "walked" alongside people and families as they acknowledge brand new struggles or continue coping with challenges that may have begun years ago. Some of the most common struggles people ask me for help with are Anxiety, Depression, lowering stress, (in all different areas of life) and taking care of themselves as a person. The only thing constant in life is change and change is HARD! If you allow me the privilege to come alongside you as we learn, work and grow during our time together my hope is you willl feel heard and experience progress towards the change you're striving for. At the end of the therapeutic process the person should be able to identify the improvements and see the outcomes you were expecting.

First session

In our first session I will review the information I have received to ensure we are on the same page Ask what brought you to seek therapy I will ask you about your experiences with therapy in the past (what you like or didn't like) If this is your first experience with therapy- Do you have any expectations? When you think about therapy what comes to your mind? I will reiterate that we are working together on the goals/outcomes you want to see. I have skills and tools as a therapist, however you are the one who is in control of what you share and at what pace we focus on goals, or maybe shift to more immediate things as they come up and that's ok. Depending on the flow of things I may ask more questions during this first session, so you can see we are truly engaging in getting to know each other as teammates (if you will) Near the end of the first session I will ask if you have any goals in mind, or I can suggest some possible goals that we then can agree on for therapy. Then I will finally ask how you are feeling this session went and if you have questions/concerns?

Strengths

Throughout my career I have intentionally provided a collaborative, supportive and non-judgmental therapeutic enviroment. Additionally I listen to clients as they are truly the experts when it comes to past experiences and the person they are coming into therapy as.. Each client and therapist working rythms are uniques so my approaches to helping each client is unique to them,

Ideal clients

My ideal client is someone who acknowledges they need help and acknowledges working with a therapist could provide support and learning for both them and myself I provide a compassionate, non-judgmental space to work toward the goals for every client to live their best life possible. This may be increasing the coping tools you have available to you, or finding ways to utilize the tools you haven'y used in awhile to handke a new set of life circumstances. I also have have extensive experience working with people who are experience disability, chronic illness, medical trauma, caregiver burnout, to name a few.

Treatment methods

Child-Parent Psychotherapy

The child parent relationship is one of the most important and changing relationship in a person''s lifetime. Both parents and children can find therapy sessions helpful to reflect on one another's viewpoints as well as restructuring boundaries as both grow/ change over time. In addition some clients find this approach helpful to work through the lack of relationship with a parent and recognizing other people/supports in theiir lives that have been there for them. Sometimes parents and/or children do not live up to the expectations of each other and I strive to provide a therapeutic space to process these things and create the best outcome for the client.

Compassion-Focused

As a therapist one of my main goals is to join with my clients in understanding what has brought them to therapy so that they cab feel less alone in their struggle. Compassion for the challenges in each individuals life experience allows us to work together as equals in a therapeutic parternship and progress to reach the client's goals for a better life.

Grief Therapy

People often think of grief therapy only in the context of when someone important in their life dies and although that is a significant part of this work. I see grief therapy being useful for any life changiing loss a person experiences. For example, divorce, loss of a job, loss of independence and the list goes on. Acknowledging the grief/loss and then working together through different stages of grief wdwhile identifying coping strategies for adjusting to one's life. When I work with those who are grieving I incorporate several other therapeutic approaches to meet the client's needs as we work together to adjust to their grief experience. Grief is not a linear process (some days are better than others) However together we can work to honor your grief while moving on with your life in the present.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

The way we think about ourselves (as a person), our life experiences (past and present), and others shapes how we respond (or behave). Many things can influence how we think and experience life, not to mention each person in our life can shift/ influence our behavior. As a therapist who uses CBT I prioritize listening to my clients and frequently asking clarifying questions to ensure I understand their viewpoint. Ofteb I ask clarifying questions so that together we can explore other possible viewpoints of the experience. In addition talking through how adjustung one's viewpoint or reaction may change how they think/feel or how others respond.
