(he/him)
A Michigander at heart, Dr. Dhillon completed all his schooling in Michigan. He completed his undergraduate degree at Michigan State University- graduating with honors with a bachelor’s of science in Human Biology and a minor in Psychology/Human Ethics. Concurrently fueled by his interest for medicine, he attended medical school at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine- Detroit campus. Continuing his academic and professional trajectory, Dr. Dhillon further honed his expertise in the field of Psychiatry, once again at Michigan State University- Adult Psychiatry program. He was fortunate to train with and under highly respected and renowned psychiatrists. He has achieved board certification by the prestigious American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology since 2019. Since graduation from residency- Dr. Dhillon has furthered his experience by working in vastly different settings- hospital systems, emergency services, treating severe, persistent mental health at Community Mental Healths, and has ventured into assisting at nearby private practices. With his experience- Dr. Dhillon felt a profound calling to elevate patient care standards, thereby co-founding Midwest Psychiatry Group. Dr. Dhillon is particularly interested in psychopharmacology and utilizing medication management along with psychotherapy and behavioral activation to ease symptoms of mental illnesses.
In our first session, I focus on creating a safe and non-judgement space where you feel comfortable sharing your story at your own pace. We'll explore what brought you in, what's been most difficult, and what you hope to gain from psychiatry. I'll ask questions other than better understand your background, strengths, and challenges, and we'll begin identifying goals together. My aim is for you to leave the first session with a sense of relief, clarity, and hope that you don't have to face these challenges alone.
My greatest strengths would be providing an integrative approach where I combine cognitive-behavioral, motivational, supportive, attachment-based, and multicultural frameworks so treatment is tailored to you- not a one-size-fits-all model. I see the therapeutic relationship as a healing space where trust, safety, and compassion allow for real growth. I honor each person's cultural identity, values, and lived experiences, ensuring therapy respects and integrates your unique perspective. Whether you're seeking symptom relief, healthier coping strategies, or deeper relational healing, I help you recognize your strengths and move toward lasting change. I provide encouragement and validation, while also gently challenging unhelpful patterns so you can create the life you want.
My ideal clients are people who are motivated to better understand themselves and make meaningful changes in their lives- even if they're not sure where to start. They may be struggling with anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship challenges, or questions of identity and purpose. Some are navigating culture or generational differences, while others are working through patterns rooted in earlier life experiences. What they share is a desire for growth, healing, and the courage to engage in an honest, supportive therapeutic process.
Other specialties
I identify as
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I regularly use CBT to help patients identify and challenge maladaptive thoughts, develop healthier cognitive patterns, and practice behavioral strategies to reduce anxiety, depression, and maladaptive coping. In sessions, I often guide patients in recognizing distorted thinking, link these to emotional states, and collaboratively create behavioral experiences or exposure tasks.
Motivational Interviewing
I use MI particularly with patients facing ambivalence about change, such as substance use, medication adherence, or lifestyle modification. My approach focuses on eliciting "change talk", exploring discrepancies between current behaviors and long-term goals, and supporting autonomy. Rather than confronting resistance, I work to strengthen intrinsic motivation and readiness for change.
Supportive
Supportive psychotherapy is foundational in my practice, especially for patients in crisis, with limited coping resources, or when building trust is the first priority. I provide validation, encouragement, and psychoeducation. I help patients strengthen existing coping strategies, develop problem-solving skills, and maintain therapeutic alliance during times of instability. This is often the backdrop against which more structured modalities are integrated.
Multicultural
My patients come from diverse cultural, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds, which shape their views on illness, treatment, and healing. I actively explore cultural identity, values, and worldview, and integrate these into treatment planning. I adapt interventions to align with cultural norms and remain mindful of my own biases. This fosters culturally responsive care and strengthens trust.
Attachment-based
Many patients present with relational trauma, insecure attachment patterns, or difficulties with trust. Recognizing this, I draw on attachment theory to deepen insight into relationship dynamics and promote secure attachment in the therapeutic alliance. I attend closely to the therapeutic relationship, modeling reliability, empathy, and attunement. Through this, patients can re-experience safety in relationships and learn healthier ways of relating to others.
